Many people in Hull work in the East Riding as well.....the East Riding provides a lot of employment for people living in Hull......around half the ERYC Staff in Beverley & other local sites actually live in Hull....remember anyone working in Hessle, Cottingham, Willerby, Anlaby, Ferriby, Hedon, Paull etc are actually working in the East Riding
There are actually several funding streams that Hull doesn't get, but they tend to be individual and intermittent. As far as other stuff goes, a bit broad brush I know, but I'm tired and I was more responding to the claim it was equal, but things like being the site for the regional hospital, which would probably not be viable for just the surrounding villages, that would then be more dependant on other, more distant regional centres. There's also the road infrastructure, that the port is almost directly responsible for its existence. We're seen as isolated enough, but I doubt they'd build dual carriageways to get people to North Ferriby, so shopping in Leeds would be more necessary and less accessable. The main point is, there is a fair argument to say that a fair bit is down to the local towns and villages benefiting from the existence of the City.
Remember that main trunk roads are paid for by the Highways Agency & not local authorities There have been many years (under Humberside) where most outside Hull have built up a great resentment for the City, as a far greater share of the local government grant was spent in Hull than on other parts of that hated county. Hull has had & wasted money during the good times, which if it had been spent wisely would have put the City in a better state than it now finds itself when pickings are more scarce
The spend on trunk roads comes from what is now Highways England, but they wouldn't have spent it to get to Ferriby. The port created the need for the trunk road that provides your route to York and Leeds. No Hull, no trunk road. Like the calculation of how much is spent now, the share of the spend on Humberside is debatable, but I certainly agree it was extremely wasteful. The amount from Central Government doesn't all come in one pot, so figures can be misleading. There are numerous other grants and credit approvals for a variety of schemes.
I suppose it's not really an issue as even with planned flood defence improvements, if sea level increase projections are to be believed then around 50% of what is now Hull will be under water in 50 years
Big screen back in Vicky square today. Showing the university graduation ceremony. Will have been a lot of out of towners visting today. Many for the first time. Such a shame they are seeing a city centre that is so dated and being allowed to deteriorate badly. Weeds growing in the square ffs. It's embarrassing. We know it's all due for a major revamp, but these visitors won't. How about putting up some renders around the city centre showing what it will look like. Encourage them to come back.
Agree. I went for a wander today, and it didn't look well kept at all. The marina is overgrown with weeds too, all sprouting out the gaps in the pavers, a couple of feet high. Are they doing it on purpose? There was a few hundred people in Vicky Sq when I passed through, there was also a pair of total goons with a Tesco bag full of beer wading through them all, complaining about everyone being in their way, swearing, and intimidating them to move. Real losers. Cringey stuff.
No, but they were heading in the general direction of Hustler's Pool Hall, near the multi-story, so....
It does seem like they don't feel the need to maintain the place, just because it'll be all good for 2017. Well people are still visiting. We'd like them to come back in 2017. It's not good enough. As for the goons. These things do sadden me. Many of them will have been let down by someone or something at some point in their lives. But ffs, let's move them along on days like today.
Goon update. Still some families sat out on princes dock street. Who wouldn't, it's a lovely spot. Young slapper, wearing those leggings that look like they've been spray painted on, storms by whilst engaged in a long distance argument. '**** you, you downy queer ****' she shouts. Kudos for fitting all that in a single sentence. But a real cringe moment.
The problem is that there simply aren't the staff left at the council with all the cuts to do jobs like this !! Perhaps it's time for the council to make use of some of the people who have to serve community service orders & get a crew of them on tidy up duty after all they are only based on Liberty Lane......better than having them picking up litter at Spurn Point. A few days & they could have things looking OK again & they don't even need to waste money on transport
There did seem to be a lot of people around today with more aggression than your average punter 'round the shops. That, in addition to the countless kamikaze pigeons, made it somewhat of an assault course for the casual out of town visitor.
You're not wrong. But you'd think there would be premium zones which are maintained to the highest possible state of repair.
OB should be clamping down on the can drinkers in the city centre, I believe there's recently been a ban on drinking in the city centre in Lincoln(other than outside licensed premesis) that's been successful. They could cover the cost of weeding the marina, from the budget currently set-aside to fund people taking time off for gender reassignment. If John wants to become Janet, that's up to them, but it shouldn't lead to a messy marina...
As I said though (and I agree about set aside budgets although councils are tied to certain provisions under E&D legislation) there are people who should be involved in "Community Payback" ........if they were used they would at least be putting something back into the community & working as a small team they would need minimal supervision......win, win for the Probation Service
A Londoner be pigeon holing us in every ignorant way possible. Weigh in and feel free to show how rightly proud you are of your city and surrounding areas. http://www.not606.com/threads/pl-clubs-you-dislike-and-why.305961/page-13
