Congratulations Dazzar your passion is commendable and you have indeed put a lot of time and thought into this project, but I doubt that the powers to be will take any notice. I had a couple of my own ideas laughed at continuously when I put them forward on various forums. After yet another death near the St Stephens crossings I suggested a Las Vegas style footbridge, with escalators at each end crossing diagonally from St Stephens to House Of Fraser (Hammonds) but the response was to be expected I suppose.

It was rediculed of course but none of the detractors put forward any alternative suggestions, one even mocked me by the suggestion of helicopter flights over the city center, another Las Vegas feature acctually. I replied, good idea as long as the trip icluded a flight over the Humber Bridge and the surrounding countryside, more mirth. But I do take issue over your comments on Willberforce house, I think its a mess compared to its previous set up. At one time there was a replica of a slave ship depicting the appalling conditions on board complete with sounds of despair.

Its now gone and the reason I was given by the staff was that it was too 'scary' for some people, of course it was scary because it was supposed to be. Now it has been replaced by notice boards, lots of them and any impact has been totally lost, PC gone mad. I enjoyed reading your project Dazzer so once again well done.
 
The root of the problem is those entrusted with the decision making.

Our most talented people go into the private sector and build their commercial and entrepreneurial skills trying to grow their business by being customer-centric. i.e. Giving customers what they actually want.

Those who go into the Public Sector particularly those who get themselves into decision making positions at Councils have little commercial experience. They progress by becoming adept in the protocols of committees and its decision making processes. They hire consultants to do their thinking for them, but usually these are of the financial type who usually just look at the world through a de-risking lens.

The answer: privatise Councils and get rid of the dead wood and layers of bureaucracy.

It is an absolute disaster that whole junction. I pulled a woman back from crossing the bit going to what was Shire Horse. She just didnt look left, had her little son with her. The bus, which was steaming through, missed her by inches.
 
That St Stephens crossing is remarkable. The width of it, the bend, and the care-free bus drivers who hurtle through there.

It won't do the city of culture much good if visitors, upon arrival from the train station, immediately see some teenager crushed to death by a double decker.

How that got through whatever planning there was is a mystery.
 
A brilliant masterplan Dazzar, with some really novel ideas.

I would suggest forwarding to Burnsie, who likes to discuss such ideas on his show. It would be good if he could dedicate a show with some councillors, developers, town planners etc on a panel.

It's unlikely much will be done in the short term but we need radical forward thinking people like yourself with a passion for the City to have their ideas considered and explored because sometimes other good solutions or concepts can be found also.

Interesting read Dazzar. Whilst it's unlikely to be/was financially viable I recall HCC had a feasibilty study for a barrage from Hessle to Barton on Humber and creating a Humber Regional Park.I tried to see the report in 1967 but Alderman Schultz advised it was confidential. Another opportunity would have been for Brough to become a regional airport.

Sorry for the lack of responses - as I said, I've just moved in to my first house, so have no Internet, the EE signal is poor at best here and the thunderstorms have wiped what little bit of signal there was, out.

Sat in Beech Tree borrowing their wi-fi at the moment - good excuse for a drink though!

Brough did sort of become a regional airport in the 70's-80's a few companies use to fly from Brough think Croda been one of them, sadly soon to be a housing development

It should be a 20 mph zone with speed cameras to deter speeding
I agree the bus drivers seem intent on ploughing down pdestrians at times
Also some pdestrians seem to have a death wish walking across there I didn't let my daughter cross til she was 15.
 
There's always the temptation for the bus-drivers to jump the 'amber'. Timetables are involved, so if they have to wait for the next 'green', they can have lost minutes. Queues build up at the stops and the loading/ticketing can thus add more time. Any delays on the road and they get to be later and later.

Some interesting ideas Daz! I've got a question regarding the Ice Arena. Why do you think the Ice Arena currently isn't fit for purpose and why would it be more beneficial to knock it down and build a brand new arena?
The city has traditionally struggled to attract big music names (in comparison to Leeds and Manchester) because of our dog-leg location and I've always thought the Arena was adequate for the "arena artists" that head our way.

I think it's bollocks all this about Hull's location. We're an hour from Leeds and Sheffield. It's hardly bloody Landsend is it.

It might as well be. You don't go through Hull to get anywhere else, unless you're planning a stop off at say the Deep or something.

Leeds, Sheffield and lots of other similar places are easier to get to. That's a fact.

They have also built up things people want to go visit and spend their money on.

Plus, they're easier to get to.

I obviously love Hull, I love visiting the city, but, it's a royal pain in the arse to get to, and theres nowt on the way in to break it up either.

I'm not sure how to explain it that well tbh, you'd have to have lived out of the city or even the area for a while to understand.

A Meadowhall, or similar would stop people in the area buggering off west. Even an outlet type place like they have in Bicester Village. Even Spalding has an outlet village ffs, and thats always busy. All good reasons for visiting a place. Plus of course a decent city centre, that's easy to get parked, easy to get round and which has things for all tastes, bars, bistros, shops, museums, attractions etc etc, all easy to get to.

People are basically lazy. If you put everything they want in one place, or in easy to get to places, they will visit.

Hull is not easy to get to so it has to create a good reason for people to make the effort.

Did you consider a Hull overground. I know Humberside did a feature a fair few years back on using the many rail routes in the city to create a light rail/tram network. This could work just as well as a park and ride. What do you think? Link here. It was back in 03 they discussed it.

I know Steve Plater who runs the Dinosaur museum in the Fruit Market had something to do with proposals for a skyrail system in Hull.

The current overhead railway could and should be utilised better though. I heard there was also once proposals to create a park N'rail system at the end of the M62 for freight lorries to be loaded onto trains and shipped to the ports to free up the A63 for cars.

Perhaps we could team up with Flamingo Land and use their cable cars to ship people between the interchange and the KC Stadium, haha.

I think it's a valid point for the majority of people in the UK. But as you say it depends where you're starting from and I really liked that Dazzar hopes to exploit one of our USPs and get more people from the continent to stop off here rather than just passing through on their way somewhere else. They're not as hampered by preconceptions of Hull being a grim northern ****hole either, however unfair that might be

It's dilapidated - the council really haven't looked after it. It's not fit for purpose. No wonder it is so underutilised - gigs there are very few and far between.

Last time I was there I was appalled at the state it's in. I'd say it's not had much spent on it cosmetically since it opened.

I also think it's in a poor location - right in the heart of the city near to the interchange, as a focal point of the new Jameson St square would be much better, as a place people couldn't fail to notice it and not miss what is actually happening at the venue.

If the Albert Dock area and bullnose is developed for a cruise terminal, the ice arena land could then also become prime development land.
