One suspends betting, everyone assumes that because they've suspended it, it's definitely happening, so everybody lumps on MON elsewhere... Who knows, but there have been 5 different favourites in the last 5 days, so I've given up trying to guess and won't believe anything until I see someone holding a Leicester shirt at the KP!
I am worried rather than excited about O'Neill taking over. He's no longer the ambitious young manager looking to make his way up the ladder. There's no more jumping up and down on the touchline, no more kicking and heading every ball. He's aged and he's probably fulfilled all of his ambitions - to manage Celtic and the national team, so he has nothing left to prove or aim for. I prefer to remember everything he achieved when he was here before - the good times he gave us by winning trophies and taking ordinary players and making them into some of the best who have ever represented this club and building a team that was fit to play in Europe. I want to remember how good he still was right up to his final game and how devastated I was when he finally left, yet I couldn't begrudge his leaving because we all knew he couldn't resist the call of his beloved Celtic. I would hate to see him come back and ruin that memory.
Understand how you feel Bucks. Remember when he was thinking of going to Celtic, he agreed that if he stayed here, we would be challenging for top 3 within 2 seasons. Only one person knows if he has the drive and ambition still, and that is Martin himself. The odds being quoted by the bookies look like it is virtually a done deal, but like others have stated, what do the bookies know. I would love him back here with Lennie his assistant with a view to take over in a couple of years. Seems such a long time ago that NP was sacked.
Exactly my sentiments. Time and the premier league has moved on. Unless you're Mourinho I would never advocate going back somewhere to try and recreate the success's of the past.
Really? He's not achieved anything since spending a fortune at Villa (where he ofen choked European football). After which he was largely responsible for relegating Sunderland. I'm not saying he's a dinosaur, but we've built success on Sports Science. Something i'm led to believe that MO'N hasn't taken on board. despite what you think. 5-10 years is an age in Football. He's also been particularly poor in recruitment, although that shouldn't be an issue should we retain Walsh. His man management and motivational skills can't be questioned though.

I understand Bucks' concerns but I think coming back would be the type of 'challenge' he would relish ... call it unfinished business ... I also think he is a sufficiently well established and respected 'name' that he would attract the better players and that Cambiassso might extend his stay with him at the helm ...
Look where Villa are now ... he finished 6th three times in a row ... and took them to a League Cup final ... "he often choked European football" ... I'll be happy to cough in such circumstances! His first season at Sunderland was a great success ... the second admittedly had a poor end to the season but they were hovering around 10th at mid-season ... Particularly poor in recruitment? ... can't say that any of his purchases whilst with us were not better than what they were replacing ... Whilst I don't like Ashley Young he brought him in to Villa and was subsequently sold on at a very nice profit ... At Sunderland he brought in Adam Johnson and Steven Fletcher - both very good players on their day - and, as I seem to recall, Sunderland's downturn in form in his second season coincided with Fletcher getting injured ...
I'd welcome him back, we have owners that became fans of the club watching him here in the 90's who are willing to splash some cash on players (maybe the Austin bid was just an indicator for new candidates?), an already solid squad and what we need is a manager that can motivate them like Pearson did. No-one we have been linked with can get players to the same level as O'Neil imo. But again, we are still on rumours, really just want this sorted so i can predict our league position next year.
I have to say that I'm really surprised we haven't made an appointment yet. If the owners had known that they were binning Pearson after Thailand, I would have thought some wheels would have been set in motion behind the scenes. I wouldn't have expected an indecently quick replacement named but by now, Yes. Makes me wonder if something went off between the board and NP early last week and it really was a quick decision to get rid.
