Thing is, if you think about it rationally (I know, I know), it's likely that Toby would have been perfectly happy to have stayed, but then Spurs came along with a bit more dosh PLUS (and this is the big one) a bunch of his mates from his country were there and telling him to join. Hell, I'd be VERY surprised if the Belgian team boss didn't have a word with young Toby and say "hey, might be a decent plan to play with those boys leading up to the Euros".

If it's a close call (and we are close to them as a side, if not in terms of absolute power just yet) then those things will swing it, and they're absolutely fair enough. If you put yourselves in his position, 99% of us would likely end up at Spurs under those circumstances too.

No ill will, and it's madness to have any towards him. I'll applaud him heartily when he returns to St Mary's and wish him the best.

We just need to dust ourselves down, pick ourselves up and hopefully find someone even better!

PS - I'm quite sure Ronald realises the above too.

Ronald has managed around the Dutch leagues and trust in him that they are more than accustomed to losing their best players on a regular basis.

He hasn't lost all of his good players here and had to do a complete rebuild. In fact, Toby is the only Koeman signing to have left the club.

And it's arguable whether he really has 'left' or just not returned, seeing as he wasn't on a permanent deal.

As I said before I will respect his choice, I think it was the wrong one and I don't quite understand why yet, good luck to him, we have to move on without him.

I think it's fairly clear why as I've outlined above. Another way to look at it is why would he choose us over them? He had a good season here last year and he has some mates here. Other than that....

Gutted. More so than morgan or clyne. But we need to move on. No - March on...

Most of us had never heard of Toby when we signed him on loan. And each time we lose a central defender these last few years, we always end up with someone better.

Glad to see yet another mercenary leave. West Ham are in for Ogbonna for 8 million. Worth a shout.

I think you'll find most people had heard of him. And "mercenary"? That's really very harsh.

I just hope that this doesn't unsettle or frustrate Ron in any way, so that he is more willing to make a move himself now he can touch the glass ceiling. Or hope he doesn't feel frustrated with the club's approach to this Toby situation. Though we know he's a realist and a pragmatist, so hopefully not the case. His ambition must surely outstrip the club fairly soon, though.

You might be in the know about something, but I have no idea what the club's approach to this attempted transfer was, or whether they could have done anything different to tempt Toby into joining us - Personally, I think Ron knew exactly the set-up he was joining including wages structures and transfer policy so I can't see something like this unsettling him.
