in the end lads we still could do with many things but i'm 110% sure we need a top striker. has to be priority over anything else

Not at what Saints were willing to pay him anyway. I imagine Clyne and his agent had a conversation something like this.

Agent : We've bottled it Nathaniel. I thought you were good enough but no CL team wants you

Clyne: Oh dear,I now look a right mug

Agent: Don't worry I have just got a call from Liverpool, you know what that means nate, we can name our price !

Clyne : I don't know, they were dirt last season and I don't know if I would want to be a part of what happened at the Brittania on the final day. I am a professional.at the end of the day

Agent: Bear in mind Nate this crowd of mugs paid a combined 55 million for Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing and did you see what they spent 150 million on last summer ?

Obviously not. He made it clear that he wanted to play in the CL. The fact no CL team led him to choose liverpool for reasons stated in post 212.

Teams don't just make their interest in players known when the transfer window is open, contract discussions and fees are discussed with players and clubs respectively if the window is open or shut. For the record I don't agree with it as I think it nearly 100% of the time adversely affects the players form. Clyne has gone on record and made it very clear that he wants CL football at a level above Saints which I understand..What I don't understand is how anyone could honestly think he snubbed the CL interest he clearly craved to join Liverpool, a club he has no affinity with and finished one place above Saints and have the same Euro footy next season.
 
I don't know who Clyne rejected, if anybody. I don't believe all the gossip but there's been plenty of links that LVG has been interested in him for there not to be an element of truth in it. I'm not fussed either way whether we signed him or not <ok>
