Of course. I get ya though, he was a hell of a horse but they all are in that list and I just formed a quick opinion to answer the OP's thread.

    How would you price them?

I've no idea tbh mate, I haven't even seen a few of them run! I just have watched a fair few of this beasts races on YouTube and he never failed to surprise. I think he's won a sequence of races that no horse has done since but don't ask me to swear an oath to that, or even list them <laugh> His battles with Kalanisi are the stuff of legend, the Iron Horse never knew when he was beaten. He'd never been an outsider in any Flat race imo, but like I allude to, I know nowt about a few there <doh>

I could be cleaned out fairly swiftly then :) Sea The Stars would save me as always! Loved that horse, for some reason I felt attached to him more than any horse I've known. It's all debatable and that's good for the sport as a whole, if we all agreed what a boring place it would be.

By a nose each time though. To be fair to him though, he did have a greater will to win than any horse I've seen:biggrin:

Tough call between Nashwan and Mill Reef on that evidence. That's why Brigadier Gerard would get my vote in the race as he proved superior to Mill Reef, and Mill Reef himself was clearly a great horse

Brigadier Gerrard (essentially a miler) beat Mill Reef (essentially a 12f horse) 3l over 8f in May. That does not make BG superior. Had they raced over 12f I would expect Mill Reef to have comprehensibly reversed that form. Therefore over 10f it most likely could have gone either way. I think my money would have been on Mill Reef as he would have pulled away from some way out and I doubt BG would have got to him.

Of course it's only because I backed it, 1963 winner Khalkis I'll never forget. Garnie Bougoure produced him right on the line. Trainer and jockey also won it the following year with Ragusa.

I really like that trait from a horse Shergar. You never know when you are at the bottom with a horse like that who just keeps finding every time something gets upsides. Great quality to have and debilitating to rival horses who just can't give no more.

This is nonsense saying Brigadier Gerard was essentially a miler. Of the last half of his career he ran in 9 races of which 2 were over 8f!! Hardly the career of a miler. 6 were over 10f and one was over 12f. One of the 8f races one was a pipe-opener in the Lockinge (just like Frankel did) which he won easily from the 3yo Grey Mirage. Admittedly the other 8f race was the PE Stakes at Ascot where despite being left 6 lengths he smashed the course record, but just because he broke course records at 8f doesn't mean he wasn't as good as at 10f at which he also broke course records.
You can't say he was essentially a miler there's no basis.
My view on his position with Mill Reef was that over 8f he was about 6lb better and at 12f that would be reversed. Over 10f I believe on any going better than good to soft BG would have beaten Mill Reef. There is no reason to believe BG deteriorated after beating Mill Reef or that their form relative to each other changed. He won on soft and heavy ground but didn't like the rain.

We will never know Ron but 3 lentghs is quite a beating. Mill Reef was not just a mile and a half horse, he won the Coventry stakes, the Gimcrack and the Dewhurst as a 2 year old, so he wasn't lacking in speed.

Brigadier Gerard also won a King George over 12 furlongs, so he wasn't lacking in stamina either. So I'd side with BG over 10 furlongs

I'd of thought it would have been Brigadier Gerard as he still won the Lockinge and the QE2 that year:biggrin:

Could have been but as he only won one proper mile race hard to imagine it. High Top won the 2000G and looked good but was beaten by Sallust in the Sussex who had won the Diomed and the the Porte Maillot. By this time Lyphard (who Freddy Head had seemed to want to put over the far rail at Epsom) was winning everything in France ( won the Jaques Le Marois and the Foret) and was favourite to win the Prix Moulin in October but was beaten by Sallust (who'd also won the Goodwood Mile). So I'd have said Sallust was probably the Champion Miler that year, but I don't know if they name a top horse at that distance. A good year for milers I'd say.
Brigadier Gerard got a 142 rating for his 3yo career (mainly 8f) and 144 for his 4yo career (mainly 10f). I'll stick to my guns.

Secretariat burst onto the scene across the Atlantic in '72 as well. Not a bad year was it.

Seeing that Brigadier Gerard was named British Horse of the Year for 72, wouldn't that just about make him the top miler? Dunno.

6 defeats for Secretariat, and only 1 for Brigadier Gerard. I know which horse I'd rank higher
