Dutchman pens one-year deal on Wearside.

Sunderland AFC is delighted to announce the appointment of Dick Advocaat as head coach.

The highly-experienced Dutchman has put pen to paper on a one-year deal at the Stadium of Light.

Speaking about his decision to return, Dick Advocaat said: “After a lot of discussions with Ellis and Lee, they convinced me that I am the right man for the club.

“It was a great feeling to be part of Sunderland in the last few months, the experience was something very special and after talking with Lee, Ellis and of course my family, we all agree it is the right decision.”

Sunderland AFC chairman Ellis Short said: “Dick’s credentials in football are top class and we saw what an impact his vast knowledge and experience had on our team and the club as a whole in just two months.

“Sunderland fans took him to their hearts and so did everyone at the club, so we are absolutely thrilled that he will be here longer term.”

The club’s sporting director, Lee Congerton, added: “Dick was always our number one choice and we were determined we weren’t going to take 'no' for an answer. I have been in constant contact with him over the last two weeks and I'm absolutely delighted that he has agreed to return.

“In just a short space of time he has bought into the club wholeheartedly and understands exactly what we need now in order to move forward. We have a lot of work to do to prepare for the season ahead and that starts in earnest now.”

They certainly kept those cards close to their chest!!

Don't think I'll be playing poker with Congers anytime soon!!

That Congers starting to grow on me, and not in a cyst sort of way!!!

Brilliant news
Continuity is key though. Whoever comes in to assist will take over the reigns in a year. I will be interested to see if the chap who was his coach (Bert??) comes with him this time or if he will approach Cocu

You'll be interested to see if a manager of a champions league club will come be our assistant... Don't hold your breath mate.

Over the moon he is back. He knows what the club needs to do to get out this relegation bull ****.

The glorious thing is we've gone from hiring late and being behind in preparation to bringing in someone who knows the team, knows what it needs and has already been working with Congerton on players. We're suddenly back on schedule in preparations. <party>

Well I'm one happy bunny at the moment. It is great to get the uncertainty out of the way, and hopefully we will all unite behind him and give him every chance in the world to succeed.

This, uncertainty out the way, we can now look to build our targets. Unsure if they will come with it being just 1 year

Don't think I've ever been this happy about a manager signing for us, it's genuinely made my day, next season can't come soon enough now.

Did anyone have any daft money on this? It all broke pretty suddenly so I'm sure there must have been people who got daft odds at about 100's.

The bookies had no idea, as did the papers, as did we.

What a great day to be a Sunderland fan.

Aye, Ellis Short & Dick Advocaat probably! It was around 300-1 soon after Advocaat 'retired.'

Aye or Mrs Advocaat only wanted a fat retirement sum. Imagine the conversation:

"Tell them you don't want it. Wait till the odds are daft, then stick that £500k bonus Ellis gave you at the end of the season on, then tell him you'll go back".

Job's a good'n.
