Steve Bruce will offer a new contract to
Stephen Quinn, but a ruthless summer reshuffle is likely to see
Paul McShane leaving the KC Stadium.
City have quickly begun reshaping a squad relegated from the Premier League, with Liam Rosenior the first to be told his services would not be required in the Championship.
Bruce has since spoken with all other players whose contracts are due to expire next month ahead of a retained list being published either today or tomorrow.
Quinn has been told talks over a contract extension will resume in the coming weeks but the Mail understands McShane will be allowed to leave on a free transfer.
Steve Harper, Maynor Figueroa and Yannick Sagbo are also set to depart when their contracts expire at the end of June.
Although cuts were inevitable in the wake of relegation from the top flight, news of McShane's likely departure will come as a disappointment to supporters.
The defender has become a firm fans' favourite during his seven years in East Yorkshire and finished the season as a central figure in the fight for survival.
A battling performance in the 0-0 draw with Manchester United on Sunday, in which he suffered a gruesome gash, only served to accentuate his cult status in what was a 136th appearance for the club.
McShane's preference was to remain at the KC Stadium, but the 29-year-old has always taken a pragmatic view following a fall-out with Bruce last December.
An extended deal for Quinn would go some way to appeasing supporters.
The midfielder featured in 28 of 38 Premier League games last season and has become a cherished figure since joining from Sheffield United in 2012.
Quinn is currently on a family holiday before joining up with the Republic of Ireland squad for their internationals with England and Scotland next month, but talks with the player's representatives will be staged over the next fortnight.
There are no guarantees Quinn will accept City's offer if interest comes from elsewhere.
The 29-year-old turned down the club's original deal tabled in December, but Bruce has made it clear he would like to see Quinn play a big part in the club's Championship return.
Sagbo and Figueroa were always destined to head for the exit door after making just seven Premier League appearances between them this season, while faith will be placed in Allan McGregor and Eldin Jakupovic, rather than Harper.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper impressed with seven consecutive appearances at the tail-end of the season but has spoken of a desire to begin a coaching career in the near future. Harper will leave the KC with the mantle of being City's oldest ever player, aged 40 years and 73 days.
The other player whose future had appeared in doubt was Alex Bruce, but the Mail has learned he recently committed his future by signing a new two-year deal.
Bruce, Quinn and Rosenior were all offered deals around Christmas time and while Quinn and Rosenior chose to keep their options open, Bruce later put pen to a paper on a contract that will run until 2017.
The impending departures of McShane and Rosenior this summer will install James Chester as the club's longest-serving player. Only he and Robbie Brady pre-date the Bruce reign that began three years ago this week.
