Now there's madness for you. Makes the EU look pretty tame by comparison. <laugh>

Osborne faces up to productivity challenge

Robert Peston reckons he has seen eight Chancellors messing about at 11 Downing Street but the current one, Gideon Osborne, has the largest rabbit in the history of economics to pull out of the hat. This will give United Kingdom plc the greatest economy on the planet and will see Osborne succeed David Cameron and ensure the Conservatives govern for the remainder of the Century (at least). The bunny is called PRODUCTIVITY... now stop laughing at the back; you must have seen this joke on page one of ‘Economics For Dummies’.

Nice conclusion by Pesto, but not really much good to those who are on the bottom rung of the ladder in the current generation with living standards pegged back by uncontrolled immigration and minimal economic growth.

David Cameron won't 'cave in' on migration target despite new figures

How big is Cameron’s nose going to grow before he stops telling the public that he can reform EU immigration? The total migration count according to the latest statistics was 318,000. That is a little bit more than any of our elected lairs (any party) was promising. Cameron reckons that taking all the money off illegal immigrant workers (allegedly about 12,500 of them) is going to stop them all coming. Why does he not crack down on the employers as they are all in the country already and under his jurisdiction? That sounds easier. It is just that nobody has enforced the existing laws since they were last updated in 2006.

Whilst the economy is ‘growing’ (i.e. creating more jobs) and most of Europe is stagnating (i.e. no jobs), people will come here looking for work because they can. That is good news in areas where we need immigrants because we do not have the people with the skills (e.g. doctors and nurses for the NHS) but is bad news for low skill, low wage workers as most of Eastern Europe can supply plenty of those. If we controlled immigration, we could let those in that we need (and maybe even house them!) and turn the rest away.

Cameron 'confident' of getting better deal for UK in Europe

Having seen the report on the BBC News, Cameron is already p***ing in the wind. They asked two former Soviet bloc country leaders about reforms and both said that “free movement of people” was non-negotiable. So we may as well have the Referendum now so that we can get out of the failing E.S.S.R. before they all move here looking for work as we cannot control immigration from the inside. Even in the unlikely event that we persuaded them to allow removal of all welfare rights, we are still a better bet than most of their countries – but they will need more than a couple of houses, schools and hospitals.

There will be some interesting times ahead during these negotiations and whilst many on here are gamblers by nature I am not sure too many would have the stomach for a gamble of this magnitude on either side. The big gamble is Cameron has to insist on what he wants with the threat of the referendum going against Europe if they refuse, he will hope the give him enough to make a case for staying in. If they choose to play hardball then it is equally as big a gamble for Germany and in turn Europe. As has been pointed out in this still embryonic stage the European Union rides on Germany, France and the UK probably in that order and so if you take the UK out the burden on the other two becomes huge, and the risk of fragmentation and collapse at a later date more likely, especially if we go it alone and things go well. Germany and France also are aware of a small but growing anti-EU element within their own countries and so they really need keep everyone united.

How I see it is that the Eastern European nations will not allow any change on the free movement of people and of course they are right to as it does underpin everything else. What we will seek is the ability to put in place robust structures that ensure non UK residents cannot easily claim benefits, housing and medical care. There will need be something written in that states these benefits are only applicable in your country of origin, which will really mean you can move around to work but not to live of another members benefits system. Now there are all manner of objections that will be made to this and some do hold water but essentially this is the most he can hope for and the least he needs to get. One thing is for sure this whole Ukrainian fiasco is a nightmare for all concerned as the EU are going to have to bankroll the Ukraine for a long time to come, it will make Greece look like pocket money. The alternative is that it collapses which is of course what Russia wants and the west and the US cannot now allow.

It would appear to be common sense that it's ok to move to work but not to claim. There could be obvious considerations in that someone who has been working but loses their job can claim some form of benefit for 3 months whilst they look for another job, that all emergency health care is given freely but nothing beyond.

    to me its all nonsense!

1- where do you buy a product - UK? EU? ROW? - you just buy the product!
2- Where is the product you buy produced? UK? EU? ROW? - you just buy the product!

So sales wise wheres the issue?

    Immigration

1- who do you let sleep in your garage/converted townhouse - whoever pays the most rent
2- where did the person come from? - Who cares if he pays crazy rent!

Ok, heres the thing as a stuanch, Maggie loving Tory, WE HAVE to stop wage top ups!
We have to stop rental payments from government to nonworking migrants!

I heard crazy stats we need to build 220000 houses per annum to cope with demand!
Now if 3 people stay in each home we build and it takes 25 years to pay a mortgage then by 2050
we have an extra 23 million in the UK therefore 33% increase in population which means we have to build 285000 homes each
year! Seriously lift the drawbridge we cant cope!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is virtually no prospect of Cameron getting enough meaningful reform that he will be fighting the ‘stay in’ corner with much more ammunition than he already has to use. The ‘stay in’ argument is almost certainly going to be run from the ‘3 million jobs at risk’ lie. Try the Institute of Economic Affairs view here.

All the former Soviet bloc countries really want to be back in a structure like the U.S.S.R. but with some sort of local political autonomy. That is why I call the European Union the European Soviet Socialist Republic – and it is destined to fail in the same way.

The plain and simple fact is that only one country in Europe is actually creating jobs at this time, so everyone from the impoverished countries wants to come here. Stopping them claiming benefits will not stop them coming. That is why the numbers rocketed in the most recent statistics. We already have a housing shortage without creating more demand for what little housing is available (that just drives prices up and rents up making the house price bubble even worse). Many of the immigrant workers want to bring their families, which will require more schools and health infrastructure that cannot just appear overnight.

Once upon a time, the downtrodden European headed for the USA. As it says on that statue near Ellis Island:
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

The words of Emma Lazarus are not inscribed at Heathrow or any other airport; at Dover or any other port. There is no golden door just an open one; and the only way to control the influx is to get out of the EU and become part of the European Economic Area like Norway or go it alone like Switzerland.

It has certainly been a good week for the Conservatives. They have managed to trap the Scottish National Party and the leaderless Labour Party with two simple measures.

In their election manifesto they promised a free vote on the existing fox hunting legislation in England and Wales. The leader of the SNP in Scotland wrote in The Guardian that her party would abstain in England-only votes in Parliament, including fox hunting. The SNP leader in Parliament, Angus Robertson, then announced that the SNP in Westminster would be voting against the changes. So only the Conservatives and Labour were having a free vote, which the government were probably going to lose anyway irrespective of the SNP.

So the government decided not to hold the vote anymore; however, the SNP have shot themselves straight through the head when it comes to the government’s plans to introduce English-only voting on Westminster legislation that only applies in England. Brian May and his friends protesting outside Westminster have wasted their time as there is no vote to protest about – the only fox that has been shot today is Nicola Sturgeon. The Conservatives only brought the fox hunting bill forward to trap the SNP: mission accomplished.

After the Budget, interim Labour leader Harriet Harman appeared on the Sunday Politics programme and said that Labour would not oppose the Chancellor’s plans to cut tax credits and cap child benefit at two children. Three of the leadership candidates then announced that they would oppose the welfare reforms. So the Labour Party is arguing amongst themselves and they have not actually chosen their 2020 Election loser yet.

The left in crisis here as well as all over Europe... and the World! Ha!
