With fracking the problem for me isn't the risk of earthquakes, even if the actual extraction method itself involves fracturing the rock which by logic creates tiny earthquakes.

My issue is the chemicals pumped in under high pressure & the risk of contamination of the water table.

There are well documented cases of drinking water being contaminated with methane gas by fracking in the USA & of flammable water as a result

I'm also shocked by the fact that we are talking about a fossil fuel here when we have over 200-300 years supply of another fossil fuel under our feet which could easily meet the majority of or energy needs for that period & which has much less impact at the point of extraction than shale gas....and that is coal.....yet we keep importing millions of tons of low grade coal from abroad to feed power stations....simply because the government worry about being held to ransom by the miners in the future.

The process of fracking is not dissimilar to how we have been extracting oil offshore for decades, obviously the negative impacts offshore (with regards to the chemicals) are significantly less than when doing it onshore.

Fracking (and its associated side effects) are the result of using the rudimental technique in a new dynamic, what we need is to develop new techniques that are safe and sustainable to use onshore. We can achieve this if enough money is invested in the process, like you say we have centuries worth or resources below our feet, the sooner we recognise that this is a viable option the sooner we can develop the appropriate techniques to extract it safely.

That's bollocks, it's just far more expensive to mine our own, than it is to buy someone else's.

The oil/gas/coal market is a false market, the current drop in oil prices is a strategic ploy by country X to lower the profit and value of the resources currently sold by country Y, whilst that is the case we will happily import because as you say its significantly cheaper and we preserve our resources for when the prices inevitably increase.

We have decades before the prices will rise high enough before we have to consider sustaining ourselves on our own resources, but we need the investment now to ensure we are able to do it when the time comes.

Or cheaper to import someone else's where the state subsidises the extraction giving an unfair market advantage

Even though it's against EU rules Germany manages to subsidise a number of things through holding part state ownership

Or import it from a country like Poland where miners did a six day week, with a "voluntary" Sunday once a month living under a communist government beloved by the likes of Scargill. Formed a union and after over 40 were shot in the Gdansk shipyard were refused any support by Scargill as he declared they were trying to overthrow a government (an unelected one as well) and that was not unions were for. If it hadn't been so tragic you could have laughed.

Bono and Hamilton don't live in the UK, so I'm not sure why anyone would expect them to pay anything.

He quoted Hamilton do I thought I would quote some that don't seem to attract the wrath of the lefties but who pay no tax here either. At least Hamilton doesn't have the bare faced effrontery to lecture governments on how they should spend money whilst evading taxes himself as Bono does.

Of course, Belgium recently had no Government for 18months. The Civil Service kept everything going and the country didn't implode.

Maybe there's a moral in there.....

You may not like the fact but around the world billions wish they lived somewhere as ****ed as this country.

That's a very good point.

We in this country moan because our politicians went to a particular school or because they are a bit posh, nerdy or awkward.

Try living somewhere in which you don't have a vote or that your vote means nothing, you'd soon change your opinion.

People were murdered in France for the right to publish pictures and the world applauded that right - unfortunately that right has bypassed this forum
Other than your whining, and crass attempts at posting ****y images and videos, this is a nice, friendly thread discussing one of the most difficult subjects there is online.

If you don't like it, **** off back to CI and post your ****e there.

Think of it as freedom of choice. You're free to **** off.

I'm liking the cut of your jib in your posts NFT.

I've spent 2 hours today so far explaining to my 2 left at home daughters (open to offers btw...) why they need to vote, and what the main differences between the parties are. Both work in the NHS, both will need their own places (SOON FFS SOON) and told them to just concentrate on what's important to them.

OLM I also had to go to the hospital today. Consultant was an hour behind, but, once in, he's a top bloke, and hopefully I'll never see him again. Yours sounds more fun and possibly worthy its own thread. Is the endoscope going in from the North or the South??

Every year MPs go on a summer recess for about 6 weeks. Most people don't notice it.

As an observation, it's probably fair to say that if nobody notices when you stop doing your job for 6 weeks, it's probably a fair bet that you weren't doing very much of anything important when you were there.

If his story of today's visit is anything to by they'll be inserting it through the urethra.

Isn't that the same for every person that ever takes a holiday?
