Agree that Robertson is a liability at left back at times. Fig left back, Robertson left wing. McShane right back, Elmo right wing, job sorted!
Our academy is one of the worst in the Premier League. We've produced Tom Cairney in the last few years and that's it. What happened to Max Clarke? He must be nearly 20 and he hasn't had a sniff at all.
I don't think we should play Robertson. For a start he's too good at attacking from deep, and he's also too young to play consistently. We need to manage him properly and throwing him into winnable home games could seriously stunt his development.
How can he be a liability at LB? He's an international LB. He's made mistakes but who hasn't? Figgy LB is ok but won't be here next year, Robbo needs to start playing when he gets the chance. Normally our 2 first choice wingbacks are literally 2 wingers it doesn't say a lot about our defenders.
Presumably we'll get confirmation of any injuries today and some of these decisions might be out of Bruce's hands, which based on Saturday might be no bad thing...
You're forgetting the post count was carried over from the previous not606 board, but the like count only started counting on this board, so he may have made less posts than you and got more likes, which is highly probable.
At times he can be, he would be far more effective on the left wing with a defensive left back behind him, unfortunately all we have is Figueroa at the moment to play that position!
Where has this idea come from that he's a winger? I don't think he's ever played there. Just cos he's good going forward doesn't mean we need to start dicking about with his position. His main strength is overlapping from deep. You'd lose that by putting him on the wing.
Not to mention his final ball is ****. I find it puzzling PLT, and I've raised the very same point before. I don't even think he's weak defensively, I think he's good at defending, he just gets caught out of position now and then but that's part and parcel of attacking with your full backs.
I Understand there's a big difference, but no one, not even his manager at the time thought Gareth Bale was a Winger... Robertson is better going forward than he is defensively. He has a great delivery, he can score goals (watch his highlights on YouTube for his season in SPL or the goal against England last year). I would like to see him play as a Winger eventually, maybe pre season..
I hate to compare him to Bale but there are certainly some similarities between the two. Bale was renowned for his defensive frailties at left back, but good going forward. I'm not saying Robertson will be a £100m player or that defensively he was as bad as Bale was, but he has the capability of being world class and I believe he will do that on the left wing. Bruce might agree with me, last time he featured for us was against Manchester City away when he came on and played on the left wing until Brady came off with a few minutes to spare..
Feel sorry for Robbo, came back from injury (probably a week early) makes a bad pass, that leads to a goal, never to be seen again, when our midfield is crying out for pace. People are pointing out his defensive problems, well look at players like Bellerin, Can and Walker and more in the top teams, but their managers keep picking them as they are improving whilst still offering the teams creativity, unfortunately our manager is old school, and I am not having a go at him, its just a fact, therefore people like Robbo are easy targets. I posted before the QPR game to get Robbo in with Elmo on the other side that should give the opposition something to think about, in my opinion Meyler, Figgy and Aluko will not save us, but the energy and pace of Robbo, Jela, N Doye and Elmo will.
Robertson will make a name for himself with his performances further up the pitch in the future I reckon.
Unless we play 442 there is no LB & LW positions. LWB is the position & it seems to be between Brady, Robbo, Figgy & Rosie. Take Figgy out of that lot when the rest is fit & that's what we've got. Townsend next year may add competition but it all depends if SB thinks he can step up.
He just needs to be a bit stronger and more disciplined at the back - gets caught out of position most games, gets bundled off the ball when trying to defend, quite easily, and has more than once this season placed a pass straight to the opposition to score from on the edge of our area. BUT, he's still developing, he will only learn from playing games. Cut out the silly mistakes and bulk up a bit and he'll be top class. We need his pace at the moment - especially when Jelavic is out, as when we have nobody to hold the ball up, the only other option is to break at pace. Going forwards, Robertson frightens the opposition - Figueroa does not.
