Sorry Dai got to disagree with you here. He is the poorest striker we have had in recent years. I think even having Danny Graham back would be an improvement. I want him gone a nd a striker in who will actually get in the box and score a few goals.
He's alright! I must say his technique which for me is the most important is below par. But I mean just the size and power the athletism of him will make sure he scores goal. Compared to danny graham he's much more built for top level football, but to me he's not really that special. Probably just good enough to be a prem striker..
As far as I can tell (looking back a bit over his games in France) he's always played as one of two up front with an attacking midfield. That is so different com the way we play and might explain why he seems to look more effective when Emnes is playing (Emnes also has played central attack). So unless we change our systems he's unlikely to be that effective as a goal scorer. His benefit in terms of goals seems to be from the attention defenders give him which leaves space for others, Shelvey (a couple of times) in Southampton & Ki on Saturday.
Still not convinced, even more so after his frenetic, fruitless performance on Saturday. Imo Gomis lacks the instinct of a true striker. On Saturday I saw a striker disconnected from his team. He was an unreachable target with no end product imo. He didn't hold up the ball effectively, ran the oddest of routes in the box and fluffed his lines in front of goal. His odd movement, especially in the box, makes it impossible for our midfield to find him without telepathic intervention. This is compounded by the fact that he cant, or wont, do the simplest of things such as getting into position for crosses or attack the near post. He always runs the wrong route, is slow to react and is often as flat footed as a Mallard. We play a simple game of zonal support, players know their positions and individual assignments. Both Cork and Naughton, Fulton, any player, can slip seamlessly into the pattern and not look out of place but Gomis still does; out of place, out of sync, out of inspiration and out of ideas. My theory is that in his past Gomis had emphasised his speed and size (= power) with a little skill to be successful. Now playing in the prem league, size doesn't necessarily matter here and I think he's finding it hard to adjust his game and up his skill sets to the necessary levels. Now, having to rely on skills he doesn't possess he is found wanting, All season Gomis has been singing a different hymn to the rest of the team which is not acceptable imo. Monk needs to realise this and drop him to the bench soon, passing the torch to someone, anyone, else.
'Monk needs to realise this and drop him to the bench soon and pass the torch to someone, anyone, else.' I can't see that happening after the promises Monk made following Gomis' interview in France and I would expect Huw to be pushing for our biggest investment to be playing. Although I don't think he's in the Vasquez category I think we should have off loaded in January even if it had meant taking a hit, financially.
I don't think he'll be played simply because of money, Bob, I certainly think that Huw et all see no one as being bigger than the club imo. What I recall Monk saying, in a video interview, was that he (Gomis) now has an opportunity to perform and become the player he 'thinks he is'. Basically he said Gomis has to put his money where his mouth is and perform, no promises made there Bob surely. I agree with you though, we should have got rid in January. I say this because I am firmly in the belief that Gomis and his agent arrived here with mercenary intent. Imo the only reason they left France was to board the premier leagues gravy train of bumper salaries and transfer bonuses and ride it into the sunset of retirement. Re January speculation, I'm pretty sure that most came from the horses mouth through interviews in French Press and releases through his agent. I believe his words were designed to orchestrate a transfer in order to make money and not enhance his stunted career. It may well have worked for him too had Pardew not left Newcastle. If Pardew stayed then imo, Gomis would be a Magpie now, not a Duck.
Simply not, he has to get in the box to score goals and he just doesnt do it. Be lucky to scoe 3 or 4 before he leaves at the end of the season.
As we are in my view safe this season monk is right to persevere with gomis and try new things with him after all we pay him a lot of money. I would try him in the old michu position of playing behind the striker and just ahead of the midfield in a 4-4-1-1 or 4-3-2-1 formation. anything is worth a try....
But dai dont we tend to play more of a 4-4-1-1 now with Siggy in that role or are you going to leave Siggy out for Gomis. I know who I would rather be playing there and It isnt Gomis.
Isn't that where Gylfi / Jonjo are playing? Given Monk's comments in the post we may be in for surprises in attack 'GARRY Monk has revealed he is focusing on his frontline ahead of Wednesday's trip to West Brom as Swansea City bid to add to their attacking threat. "It's about defending as a team, because that's something I feel we have missed in the past, and I think we have improved in that area. "Now I am trying to get some attacking work done as well.' http://www.southwales-eveningpost.c...tack-having/story-25997646-detail/story.html?
try him there we got nothing to lose by experimenting. we cant give up on gomis yet because if he dont play then we will have a hard job getting someone to pay good money for him. He has to play or we are going to lose a lot of money....
Monk is spot on its what I've been saying regarding Gomis, he has too much quality to be a failure in the premiership. Bony didn't score in his first 8 or 9 games. It takes time to adjust to the pace of the premiership, now that he is going to have an extended run in the side I agree with Monk when he says " watch him fly".
Well i still believe he has something there dying to come out as he is a quality striker whatever fans think. he has been great in training if you listen to reports and in my view it's more psychological than anything else and he needs that first goal to get him going. I remember Rooney going through the same thing a couple of years ago plus many other strikers in all divisions. I think monk is right to carry on playing him for the rest of the season as im sure he will come good....
Yes he did in the europa league and although not scoring in the league was always a goal threat. If you actually think that Gomis is quality the rest of our players must be world class. He overs four fiths of **** all in and around the box. he does run around outside the area aimlessly chasing shadows. The only flying we will see is when he is on his way out of the country either to another club or on his holidays. Simply not good enough for the PL.
Dai he scored twice against a L2 side in the cup and has played just about every minute since then but he is up against better opposition and has offered nothing in terms of a goal threat.
Well we are much more organised defensively now. So if we can combine our attacking threat/ability with our new defensive unity then good news all round
