No we paid nothing for Defoe, he was a straight swap for Altidore. We offloaded Altidore's 40k wages and replaced them with Defoe on 70k.

We are effectively 30k a week worse off in wages, but have Defoe instead of Altidore.

We hit lucky. Altidore is a massive name in the States so Toronto seemed desperate to get him and give us Defoe in the process. It really is one of the most sound deals in recent premiership transfer windows, it has to be!

 

It's not quite Chelsea getting a world record transfer fee for a defender for David Luiz, but it's up there.
