http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/Hull...le-race-8211/story-25750928-detail/story.html Well done Terry, this is a rugby city lets keep outsiders out. Hull City Council has turned down the chance to host one of Britain's biggest cycle races â but Bridlington will welcome a stage. The first Tour de Yorkshire international cycle race will be held next year, following the success of this summer's Tour de France Grand Depart. Organisers had hoped Hull would play a major part in the event, but the city council said "budget constraints" meant it had to pass. Councillor Terry Geraghty, portfolio holder for leisure and culture, said: "The council endeavours to support major events in the city, and we do wish the organisers every success, but due to budget constraints and the level of funding that would be needed, on this occasion we're just not able to." The race, organised by Amaury Sport Organisation, which runs the Tour de France, and Welcome to Yorkshire, and supported by British Cycling, will be broadcast live on national TV and throughout Europe. Bridlington will join Leeds, Scarborough, Selby, Wakefield and York in hosting the race, from May 1-3 next year. Councillor Stephen Parnaby, leader of East Riding Council, said: âHosting a major sporting event will have untold benefits for the whole county in terms of tourism and boosting the local economy and the council will make every effort to capitalise on this.â Organisers said Hull had expressed an interest in being part of the race in 2016. David Hooper, from the Hull and Humber Chamber of Trade, who is also a keen cyclist, said: âIt is disappointing nothing is coming to Hull, but we hope we will be able to host a stage in the future. âAny major sporting event raises the profile of the city and brings revenue to the city. It is a shame for Hull to miss out.â Full route details will be revealed on January 21 next year.
After working in Professional Cycling for a couple of years and seeing the shambles of the National Crit Championships that where held here earlier in the year I think its a good thing it aint coming because it was shockingly organized, would have looked **** on the city.
Blame the Tories for enforcing some of the biggest and most savage council cuts to Hull, what should they do close an old peoples home for a cycle race?
Hull City Council have amazing foresight. I can only imagine what a complete and utter **** up the city of culture year will be like. At least they'll have the chance of serial **** ups.
Blame Labour for overspending and printing money, the Tories inherited these issues from a piss poor Labour government that didn't cut it's cloth accordingly.
Labour spend money like it's Christmas. And buy ****e. And then go on a tax payer funded trip abroad to see how they buy ****e.
They are bad everywhere - his initial complaint is the Tories being the reason for the cuts. They aren't - the reason for cuts was the enormous economical catastrophe created by the Labour Government.
Just found out HCC have turned down the chance to be part of the tour d'Yorkshire next year. ****ing clueless. #numpties.
Don't these things pay for themselves? As Chazz says, let's keep it off party politics and save us having to delete anything.
What do you expect? Hull has an Old Labour council full of people who follow the old, socialist doctrine of "what's yours is mine, and what's mine is mine". They love spending other people's money on s**te and then refuse to invest in great opportunities like this. Savage cuts by Westminster, yet they still manage to overspend: http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/Completely-unacceptable-Hull-City-Council-faces-4/story-22966029-detail/story.html I await their inevitable f** up in 2017. It's a huge shame really, as this could have been a great advert for Hull as a city. Cycling is fast becoming a popular sport in this country after we did so well in the Olympics, and I can't believe the shortsightedness of HCC. Fair play to Parnaby for getting Bridlington involved, but what a missed opportunity for us as a city because of our council's piss-poor attitude to anything but Rugby League.
public sector will be no more after the next year or two .. the council have looked after their own too many times and the NHS has struggled as a result .. , that is the bare facts , hence I am leaving with a paycut just to ensure I have a job .. rediculous
