We didn't need another midfielder because we have Chambers to cover that position. We also didn't need another right back because we have Chambers to cover that position. We also didn't need another centre back because we have Chambers to cover that position. We also didn't need any cover for Chambers because we have Chambers to cover that position.
On a more serious note, it is scary to think that the management would put so much reliance on a 19 year old player with little EPL experience. Instead of being allowed to gain some experience from the seniors and the coaches and playing a few games here and there, he has suddenly become a key player. Good as it was a good buy and he is showing potential but poor in terms of squad depth and preparation.
Chambers was never meant to be the backup midfielder yet. Debuchy was meant to be RB but he got injured. Don't even act like we need another RB because we don't. We do need another CB but nobody predicted Kos would get injured.
Chelsea have 2 out and out full backs, one half breed (Ivanovic) and 3 out and out centre backs. We have 3 out and out full backs, one half breed (Chambers) and 2 out and out centre backs. If Chambers develops from a half breed into and out and out centre back then we need another half breed defender who can do both jobs. If Chambers remains as he is then we need another out and out centre back. Agree that we don't need another full back full stop (well actually we do because Monreal is just plain mediocre wherever he plays and Gibbs is injured too often to be relied upon).
Monreal is actually a decent back up LB, but should never play CB. The mistake was not buying a CB, but then as OXO has pointed out if Wenger had kept TV people would still be moaning about him being injured. We don't need another RB because we have Debuchy, Chambers, Bellerin and Jenkinson who can play there, if we'd added another RB people would be moaning about deadwood again. Chambers isn't yet a midfielder, so he wasn't bought in place of another midfielder, a DM is a position that still needs filling. Chambers might become a DM, but not at 19 he won't. So actually we're back to the same position that we all knew, we need a DM and a CB. Chambers wasn't bought to cover all of those positions highlighted above.
Schneiderlin has made some comments that have sparked speculation again. Worth a punt? Honestly IMO we need more of an organizer DM than an out and out brute. Him or Khedira would do nicely. Because without Arteta our midfield lacks shape which in turn screws over the defenders. His skills at organizing and keeping the midfield ticking is underrated.
Apparently us and Man U are linked with Vlaar as he wants to leave Villa. No quotes but it's on BBC Sport. I reckon this would be a very good signing, especially with Merts wobbling. Though I reckon he'd prefer to go to Man U as he'll be more guaranteed of a starting spot.
Would be hard to get Vlaar especially when you have the ex dutch manager in charge of manure. But his experience would be invaluable to us in the Prem.
Petr Cech to arsenal anyone ? At this moment I believe he is better than Chez plus with his experience could do wonders leading the defence
Wenger has said he will try and sign one player in Jan http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/30244311 DM or CB ?
Just the one? Does make me annoyed that he is in denial about the obvious weaknesses in our squad. Everyman and his dog knows we need reinforcements in both those areas.
Agreed, but is it realistic that we'd sign two world class players in those positions in Jan ? I'd like to see us go for players like Hummels and Bender in the summer, but I think a pragmatic move for a solid (maybe older and experienced) CB in January would be a good option for our squad this season. We're relying on Chambers and Monreal to fill the gaps at RB and CB, which means we're light on players at fullback with Debuchy out and Gibbs getting injured. Having another CB means we have good cover on the flanks (Debuchy/Chambers) (Gibbs/Monreal), so if Kos or Mert aren't available we're not stretched into playing players out of position.
