All joking aside PP, Keegan should be granted the freedom of the city for what he achieved, not just for finishing second, but for dragging the club from the brink of obscurity to one of the most entertaining teams in the country.

It is still Keegan's legacy that Newcastle are a lot of supporters second team <ok>

I will still take the piss every chance I get though <whistle>

Spot on, a lot of people forget that he actually took us from the bottom of the SECOND division, and on our way to third tier football, to title challengers. He had money, yes, but not until we were back in the prem. The fact he had us playing possibly the best attacking, open football of any team in premier league times is what made the achievement extra special.

Not all true, he did have money in Division One, he bought Andy Cole for just under £2million, an insane amount of money then outside the top flight.

Unquestionably though, the job he did was magnificent.

A fair point but Keegan took over midway through 92 season I think, saved us, then had us top of the league for the entire of the following season, before signing Cole with only about 3 months left of the season. We were already going up.

True enough like, I think he scored 10 in 12 or summat.

I've just Googled the team though, and to be fair, he did kinda buy it.

Peacock, Sellers, Cole, Beresford, all cost a few quid for the level.

I'm in o way cheapening his achievement mind, buying your way out of that league isn't easy, many, many have failed at it. We did it a little under Keane, Reid was backed second time round, but generally it's slow progress, teams like Leicester, Norwich, this season I hope Derby, it's been 3-4 years of groundwork eventually coming to fruition.

Yeah money isn't the most important thing in that league, it helps mind.

True dat, we should have nothing in reply, but the bloke went nuts. That season was funny as **** because his and his team's implosion. Love it when it gets thrown in our face as the humiliating parts will always be the stand out moments for me. Over shadowed it. No dignaty.
