Dundee United manager Jackie McNamara says he would be keen to make Conor Townsend’s switch to Tannadice permanent.

On-loan Hull City full-back Townsend has been a smash hit since arriving on Tayside as part of the £2.85 million deal which took former United fans’ favourite Andrew Robertson to Steve Bruce’s Tigers back in the summer.

Twenty-one-year-old Townsend has returned to the Tangerines top team in recent weeks after overcoming a foot injury and insisted recently he would be open to the possibility of staying in Scotland long-term as his contract at the KC Stadium expires at the end of the season.

McNamara has been happy with the English ace’s contribution since moving to Scottish football’s top flight and admits having the left-back part of his long-term plans is something he’ll look at closer to the time.

He said: “We will look at his situation again in the summer. We have him for the rest of the season and he has been very good for us.

“It was disappointing when he got injured but in the last few games he has brought balance back on the left-hand side.

“It will depend on Hull but from my point of view he has been very good for this club.”

Great to see the lad getting game time and doing well.

If Robertson carries on the way he is then we are going to get a crazy bid for him and I can see old camel toe cashing in.

Treat Dundee as a nursery club and let Connor stay up there until the end of next season to get more experience then bring him back as a backup / replacement for Robertson if we loose him.

Keep hold of him. We'll get **** all out of selling him. If he's doing well there he might be some use to us in the coming years. He keeps performing at a higher level with every loan move, so let's get him to an even higher level and see how he does.

Have to agree with this.

Pleased to hear he is doing well, I guess it could be between him and Dudge as back up for Robertson, though as Tigergonads says or a replacement for Robertson should we cash in.

Not sure what he thinks about staying in Dundee, pretty depressing place if you ask me.

Perhaps we could do a trade of sorts, Townsend for a couple of their up and coming prospects. Do they have anyone else like Robertson coming down the line?

They can have him for this and next season ON LOAN. But CT has his future here imo.

Even if it was possible what's the point? If he's doing well enough that they want him he should be able to play at a slightly higher level. A championship club might be a good next step for him.

Their academy is pretty decent, centre half John Souttar is their next big prospect in terms of youth (hes only 18 but he's already made 30 odd appearances for them). Gary Mackay-Steven and Stuart Armstrong are also being scouted by English sides (I believe we had a good look at Armstrong when we were first promoted, but we plumped for Livermore instead, which was probably the better option).

Blair Spittal is very good mates with Andy Robertson and is considered to be the next to make the jump to the PL.

I'm not sure we'd get a straight trade, but we might be able to pinch some talent with a bit of cash and Conor. I don't think he'll be needed here as we have Dudgeon to return from Barnsley, but if he continues to pull up trees, he could be offered a new contract.
