Just reading the latest news that our Government has sent 750 of out troops to 'combat' Ebola in Sierra Leone, my respect to our troops as I certainly wouldn't wish to put into a situation like that- on the same article I also noticed that also our government has chosen 4 NHS hospitals with High Level Isolation Units, one being a Hospital in London, plus another 3 in Liverpool, Sheffield and Newcastle - that have been 'identified' as hospitals where Ebola patients could be transferred in the event of a larger outbreak - so if there is a outbreak God forbid the likelihood is 3/4 of the infected patients would be moved up North!

Am I just a cynical old **** that thinks this scenario is typical of the way this government plans and makes these decisions? or am I just paranoid?

There's something insane about the way British people are sent to these places.

People flying in & out of infected areas will obviously spread the problem as it did in Spain.

The infection can 'live' for days, on clothing etc, so a person doesn't even need to be ill to transport it.

They could learn a lesson from the people of Eyam who were more sensible, and less arrogant, hundreds of years ago.

"The beautiful, historic village of Eyam in the Peak National Park, became famous during the Black Death of 1665.
An outbreak of the plague was contained when the villagers decided to isolate from the surrounding communities."

I agree its madness - All the worldwide governments are still to date inviting free and unrestricted worldwide travel from the infected areas- quarantine then eradicate the virus is the only forward ? It's just asking for trouble not to do so

I work with four Doctors, one who has just said farewell to his son, a nurse in the Army - he flew to Sierra Leone two weeks ago. To say his father his a tad worried is an understatement.

So Cameron and his cronies decide to send the affected people from Africa to London,Manchester,Newcastle and Sheffield for treatment!!None to Scotland and none to Wales!!It shows what they think of us Northerners sending 75% of the problem up north.Political or not??

Reminds me of the Foot and Mouth outbreak.

And the ****ing journalists getting as close as possible to the outbreak areas to get the "shot"
FFS! tell us about it by all means, doesn't make us more informed by you going there and being a possible carrier!

I went to Eyam years ago mate, found the story fascinating, there was a house with a sign saying that it was the first house to be infected. Came in a bundle of clothes I think.

There was some altruism involved among families too not just self isolation, so they didn't spread the problem outward.

It certainly is a strange one.

We live in a country where if you try and bring a dog in it is quarantined for 6 months (I think) but journos, priests and medical staff can fly in and out with no checks at all!!

I notice that the US are starting to test people coming in from West Africa- it will undoubtedly be too much of an infringement of their civil liberties for us to think of doing anything like that!

I do think that if you voluntarily put yourself in a position where you could become a carrier then we should have quarantine centres ready for them upon their return where they need to stay for 21 days to prove they are all clear before they are allowed back in to society. I am all for providing humanitarian aid but not at the cost of lives in the UK.

BTW the Royal Free in London only has 2 quarantine beds!

Ebola has an exponential growth in newly infected countries/areas. :emoticon-0119-puke:

We have to act and to think globally to avoid a potential global pandemic. Should this thing ever mutate and become fully airborne, then we're all f*cked I'm afraid. In the meantime, we have to act now and should have acted a lot more hastily 6 months ago.

AFAIK Newcastle and Sheffield (don't know about Liverpool) are among the best equipped hospitals in the country, if not the world, to handle such an event. I cannot believe this is an anti-norther conspiracy.

It seems those lessons haven't been learned.

This is a virtually incurable virus that's more intelligent than the people attempting to help.
It invades the body by stealth and tricks the immune system.
The initial symptoms are like a bad cold which many people shrug off and by the time they seek help they're basically f**ed.

The virus kills them and can then live on the victim, clothes, skin, protective gear and transport itself to the next victim.
It's pointless checking travellers to see if they're ill, they don't have to be ill to be a carrier ffs.

An endless stream of idiotic priests, journalists, unskilled 'nurses', etc is making things worse and spreading the virus.
Yes, we know there's a problem, we don't need some 'courageous' journalist on the ground telling us there's a problem.

Just stop f**ing about and isolate the virus before this becomes worldwide. One of the things that's kept this country out of bother, in the past, has been the fact that we're an island. An endless stream of do-gooders flitting about will do more harm than good imo.

Plus our troops are usually ill equipped for warfare let alone a Ebola outbreak - this has disaster written all over it

If I was still in and was told I was going to Sierra Leone to 'combat Ebola' there's no way in hell I'd even begin to pack my bags. The British Government could do whatever the hell they wanted with me, send me to military prison for insubordination, I'd take that all day over dying in an African hell hole.

No doubt there'll still be willing idiotic 'volunteer aid workers' driving down there with their tranny van full of nappies and apples though.

It's a horrible thing to say but I'll say it anyway.

There's no 'glamour' in helping deprived children, homeless & hungry or abused schoolgirls in the UK.

Much more 'courageous' to go to a country you don't understand, whose language you don't speak & whose problems are beyond your understanding. People and troops are things Africa isn't short of ......... they simply don't need more turning up blundering around.

Yep, you can picture the bloke now... he's a hero, he went to cure Ebola, despite the fact he has no medical qualifications, no knowledge on chemistry and he went equipped with an acoustic guitar and some crayons.
