Should Scotland be an Independent Country?

  • Yes

  • No

Results are only viewable after voting.
Never. Why would an independent Scotland deny the Northern Isles a referendum on their future? It would be hypocrisy of the highest order. Some people on the Yes campaign (not saying you) will likely see that article and scream "Project Fear" and "scaremongering from the Westminster Establishment".

The Northern Isles will get their referendum if both of these things occur:

1. Scotland votes Yes and becomes an independent state.

2. The Northern Isles voted 60% or more in favour of the Union.

Fair enough.

I wouldn't grudge them it. Not as sure as the MP's they'd win it though.

It'll be a No definitely. I'm just not so sure it will be as high a no as he expects.

This morning on Irish radio some Professor from Glasgow was saying the bigger the turnout the better chance for the YES vote ie if the ****s get out of bed they'll vote YES.

Probably Tom Devine.

He kicked f** out of Ruth Dudley Edwards on the radio the other morning. Treated her s**te talk with utter disdain.

That was some speech from Salmond there, fair play to him. Hard to follow that Nicola sturgeon.

But the question is why on earth would they want independence? At least Scotland retains just about a critical population mass in order to be a successful small nation. What on earth would the isles do? Scotland at least has a system of governance, infrastructure etc. to carry on as you were.

Probably Tom Devine.

Lets see if its treated with the same, lump in your throat, gushing praise G Brown's speech received earlier from some of the British journalistic institutions

Well they'd certainly need to upgrade the hospital. I can tell you that much. If you're in a proper bad way you'll be flown to Aberdeen.

The only infrastructure Shetland has in abundance is oil and gas production.

The Northern Isles wouldn't be independent though, they'd be a Crown Dependency like the Isle of Man, or have a similar status to the Faroe Isles within the Danish Kingdom. The United Kingdom would retain the Northern Isles if the hypothetical situation occurred. If Scotland voted Yes, and the Northern Isles voted 60% or more in favour of No, they would have a referendum on their sovereignty.

PE01516: Referenda for Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles

Date Lodged: 29 April 2014

Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to hold three separate referenda in Shetland, Orkney, and the Western Isles on Thursday 25 September 2014, one week after the Scottish independence referendum, asking the people of each island group whether they would prefer their island group to:

· to become an independent country, or
· to stay in Scotland

and, in the event of a yes vote in the referendum on Scottish independence, to have the following additional option:

· to leave Scotland and stay in the remainder of the UK

Probably Tom Devine.

I don't know, I never heard what Jackie Bird said to him.

I do know that he beat the **** out of Ruth Dudley Edwards. I usually find it quite unedifying for someone to treat their opponent with such contempt.... In a proper debate anyway. But she is a ****, so I don't care.
