Should Scotland be an Independent Country?

  • Yes

  • No

Okay. Why would a newly-independent country join a federal superstate that's even more centralised than the UK? It's the polar opposite of independence.

Come on, a bit hyperbolic perhaps.

Key to wanting in would be being inside the import/export tax barrier of one of the biggest free markets in the world. National competitiveness improved significantly

Not sure about that,ROI have send in troops in plenty of conflicts, preparing for Syria at the moment and not in NATO.The ROI troops are peace keeping so why wold it be any different for Scotland?

So it doesn't join NATO, but it will join the EU. See my other posts and ask yourself why they would join an organisation like that after campaigning for independence for over two years. What a colossal waste of energy and time.

Leaving the Union to join the EU is a pointless exercise. If I was a Scot, I would be far more enthusiastic about independence if we chose not to join the EU.

What? The two are not mutually inclusive. One is a treaty whereby you commit yourself to potentially costly wars in the name of the "defence" of other signatory nations. The other is a trade bloc. Competitiveness in global trade is key to a country's sustainability and growth, involvement in largely needless interventions is not

Not really. If Scotland were to remain outside the EU, then the benefits of a lower corporation tax rate will be reduced as relocation to Scotland will put companies outside EU tax barriers.
A lower corp tax rate in alignment with the other competitive advantages afforded to a country by being a member of the EU is likely to see significant FDI benefits

It's not just that though, is it? Trade blocs are about trade, hence the name. They shouldn't enforce laws on immigration, the environment and sanctions against non-EU countries. The EU systemically bullies the smaller member states that have less financial clout, the Lisbon Treaty is evidence of this. Countries like Portugal and Greece have suffered at the hands of the EU.

And Westminster doesn't do that?

Listen im not a major fan of the EU and I certainly was not happy by the manner in which Ireland was almost made to ratify the Lisbon treaty. Im simply pointing out why Scotland would want to be a member of the EU for the sake of its own competitiveness.
And as far reaching as the tentacles of the EU go, I wouldn't exactly equate the joining of the EU with the surrendering of independence or national sovereignty ........ yet!

And Westminster doesn't do that?

It does, which is why I'm in favour of Scottish independence. It's the policy of joining the EU that baffles me. Scotland would only be swapping its chains for nice, shiny new ones if it joined the EU as an independent state.

Well its still better that the staus quo in terms of lobbying for ones national interests in the international arena.

Independence will allow Scotland to participant as a member nation state in its own right, away from the current arrangement as a mere sub-region of a member state

I'm not qualified to say whether joining the EU is a good/bad thing for Scotland or staying on their own could be any better but if you join the EU you get nice new roads!
