Pharmaceuticals are something which we British are quite good at, for the time being. I worked for 6 years at one of the big boys and saw large chunks of the business being relocated to China and India so not for much longer probably.

It takes years to get a new drug to market, years of testing on animals, human volunteers and aliens. After all that effort most of these drugs don't make it to market so when one does you can see why they want to sell it for as much as they are allowed/can get away with. This is their business model, if you clamp down on how much they can charge, the research will suffer and they will relocate.

I 've paid at least 3k in pmi premiums and I've never needed to use it.

I'd rather it was used by the nhs, not sitting in prudential bank account.

    I disagree.

Lots of drugs are found through mistakes or luck and most of them do something completely different to what they were originally designed for.

Then theres the fact that most of them come with wide ranging side effects ranging from addiction to fatalities.

So instead of paying PHI you would pay the NHS and if you need treatment go private?

I wouldn't have a problem with that. The PHI firms and the private health care might though.

Not sure what you are disagreeing with? Past mistakes are why it takes so many years of testing to bring a new drug to market.

Them getting to charge whatever they like.

Blind luck with the added benefit of diarrhea and vomiting isn't worth rewarding in my book.
