Sunderland manager Gus Poyet wants to speak to Fabio Borini in person as he persists in his attempts to get the Liverpool striker.

Borini impressed at the Stadium of Light during his one-year loan last season and had been close to a move to Wearside, but despite a fee being agreed between the two clubs, the 23-year-old has complicated things by wanting to stay and fight for a place in the first-team at Anfield.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Poyet has not given up hope though and is waiting for the Italian to return back from Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States so that he can try and convince him and seal an €18 million deal for the striker.

Borini, however, may have been offered fresh hope of a prolonged Liverpool stay with Queens Park Rangers’ Loic Remy failing his medical ahead of a proposed move to the Reds.

Is Fabio Borini's collapsed transfer to Sunderland the real reason Liverpool didn't complete the signing of Loic Remy?
Remy's failed medical on Sunday surprised many, most notably his own representatives.
According to Sky Sports...
...sources close to the player and the deal insist it is because Fabio Borini is refusing to leave Liverpool and join Sunderland.
A fee of £14million had been agreed between Liverpool and Sunderland for the Italian striker, but Borini appears to prefer to fight for his place at Anfield.
The plot thickens..

Liverpool fans are going to warm to him if this is the case.

Linking Remy's medical failure to Borini's position is just f**ing ludicrous.

I said yesterday that Borini's gonna sign for us tomorrow. I'm almost certainly wrong, sad to say.

Going by what Gus has apparently said in the press over the last few days, it's sounding to me just a little bit desperate on his part.

I wouldn't want to sign someone who doesn't want to play for me. The thing is, we don't know the whole story, and whilst I'm sure Gus wouldn't want to sign a reluctant player, there MUST be some reason for Gus to think there's a good reason for him thinking he can still get Borini to sign. Otherwise, he's just making a fool of himself.

Hoping for a fit fletch cos getting well bored of this borini saga, if I remember correctly was gonna leave us last window re not getting a chance, so the injury plagued failed Liverpool player had a decent 5 month and they wanna a 4 mill profit. We got great money for the potential of Jordan, they ripped us a bit with the Mig, no more plan B and now

Could be something as simple as wage demands for all we know

SUNDERLAND have held talks with Fabio Borini, although the Liverpool frontman’s future is being held up by his shoulder injury.

It is approaching a fortnight since Sunderland had a £14million bid accepted by Liverpool for former loanee Borini, who returned early to the UK from Liverpool’s pre-season tour of America at the weekend for treatment on a shoulder problem.

Gus Poyet watched his words carefully when asked about Borini here in Portugal last night.

But the Sunderland boss confirmed that the club have now held discussions with Borini himself and indicated that the Black Cats are still hopeful of signing the 23-year-old.

Poyet said: “He is being assessed now for his shoulder injury. That’s stopped everything a little bit.

“We will see. I have not held talks with him, but the club has, although that’s private.

“We know where we stand.”

While Poyet is maintaining faith that Sunderland can sign Borini, it seems to be the case that the Black Cats’ interest in fellow ex-loanee Marcos Alonso has lessened significantly since the signing of left-back Patrick van Aanholt.

Alonso has been Sunderland’s main target to fill the problematic left-back void throughout the summer, but with Fiorentina holding out for more money for the Spaniard, the Black Cats turned their attentions to ex-Chelsea man van Aanholt.

Sunderland’s focus now is on signing a versatile full-back, rather than another specialist left-back.

“If you asked me before pre-season started, if I wanted two left footed left-backs, I would have said no,” said Poyet.

“Now if Alonso becomes on loan for free then we would probably take him. We need another full-back, the idea is one who can play right and left or with Billy (Jones) covering.”

On van Aanholt, he added: “It’s easy to bring in players who you know personally and you know what you are going to get.

“Patrick needs to get used to plenty of things that we do, nothing difficult but he needs to get used to it.

"I am so happy to have him here"

Gus, just stop, pack this ****e in...He's not worth the grief..

Move on ffs.

Now if we knew that everything the press have been saying is true then I'd completely agree Commo. But all we have is guesswork from the press. Not a single quote from Borini, his agent (as the quotes never said he didn't want to come to SAFC - just that he was not worried about fighting for his place at Liverpool) or Poyet saying that he wouldn't come. It's been a saga but he's still a player that knows the system at Sunderland and someone we have now spoken to according to Gus (first quote on the matter since the bid was accepted iirc)

Now THIS I am interested in.

Would be very easy for Erin to just ignore that, but she's actually came back and responded, interesting...

Why haven't the club or him come out and said something why is it his missus telling us that. Never known such a disregard for media relations from professionals.

To be fair mate, I can't and wouldn't expect much info of any kind regarding transfers from the club. In all fairness, Gus has always seemed calm on this matter.

I would love to know what's going on but I'm also equally happy to trust Poyet and Congerton to go about their business with our best interests at heart.
