The loan arranger: Steve Bruce will use system for more bargain signings
LOOKING TO DO A DEAL ... Steve Bruce.
    By Graeme Anderson
    Published on Monday 27 June 2011 11:30

SUNDERLAND manager Steve Bruce says he will make full use of the loan system again this summer.

So far this close season, the club has focused its interest on bringing in Bosman signings and pursuing players who can be bought at the right price.

Midfielder Seb Larsson and keeper Keiren Westwood are done deals, while striker Ji Dong-won’s move in a £2m deal is agreed and just awaiting the final formalities.

Midfielder Craig Gardner could also be set for a reunion with former Birmingham City team-mate Larsson, with the Black Cats closing in on a £5m deal for the 24-year-old.

And there could also be headline signings with the likes of Charles N’Zogbia and Connor Wickham on the wanted list. But the Black Cats will also look to repeat the success they had in the loan market last season, with Danny Welbeck, Nedum Onuoha, John Mensah, Sulley Muntari and Ahmed Elmohamady all playing their part.

Bruce is now hoping he can bring in players who can have a similar impact next season.

He told the Echo: “I always go into the loan market – certainly with British players – looking for a player who has something to prove.

“Nedum and Danny last season – the one thing about them was that they were desperate to play regularly. And when you have that sort of hunger in a player, it helps us and them.

“That’s my thinking. It also helps you financially – imagine trying to buy the likes of Danny, Nedum or Sulley Muntari on the open market.

“The downside is the fact that you rarely have them for longer than a season. But where else can you find an £8m defender or £10m striker for your squad for nothing?

“So it does help to bring in loan players but it’s a skill in itself picking them.

“To be fair to them – my two domestic signings Danny Welbeck and Nedum Onuoha – I couldn’t have asked for more from them in terms of the efforts they put in.

“It worked out well for them, too, because both have enhanced their own careers thanks to a season at Sunderland.

“It’s an area of recruitment that has become more important in recent seasons and certainly this summer we will be looking at the loan market to see where we can get value for money

    Not another 5 surely...

2 or 3 at most. Good for saving a bit cash initially, can help convince players who may not be 100% sure to sign at the end of the spell, and relatively risk free.

I don't mind a few loan players, as long as we are still building our own squad at the same time. Spreading the outlay over a couple of season and fully utilizing the loan system is a smart way to do business.

I'm sure nobody would mind if instead of buying Ngog and a similar fourth choice striker for £7-10m we brought in, say Jo or Bellamy on loan and used the cash to put towards Zog or a similar creative midfielder.

I am not totally against loan signings but Bruce isnt stupid and I think we may get one loanee this transfer window and as the man says we look for the players with drive and hunger to play, fair enough we only have them for the season but if they benefit us for that season then so be it.

I think depending what happens at Man U, we may get Welbeck back on loan on deadline day or something. Unless he has another player on his radar from abroad maybe, Bruce will definatley has a few tricks up his sleeve this summer.

I'd take Nedum, Danny and Hutton on loan for a season. No problem.

I don't agree Cest, sorry. I just say buy them now if we cannot get Welbeck then put a 15million bid in for Sturridge. And forget N'Zogbia put a bid in for the two Spuds lads Kranjcar & Hutton.

    Job Done, pushing for Europe......

Depends though as SB doesnt have a bottomless pit of money. If we got Hutton, Welbeck and Nedum for another season without huge investment< then the majority if the cash can be used to bring n"zog and a top striker to the club

Has Bruce not learnt his lesson from last season? The idea of loan players is as a stop gap or a trial to see how they play for us not to save cash. If and I believe that is a very big if now we have the cash available then buy players. 1 or 2 loans then okay but not any more than that.

Yeh loans are good for finance in general but can be bad because at the end of the day those players don't care as much as signed players.

Nedum and Danny last year were great though, and so was Mensah overall.

I'd agree with this, but put the £15million on the table for Welbeck rather than Sturridge <ok>

Rumour here that we are taking Bendtner on loan, anything over there about this??

Yeah sort of see your point Cest but if we played Sess just behind Gyan and brought throught Noble. I would prefer Kranjcar personally as I think Dave Whelan just hates us and would probably sell to another team cheaper than to us, what sort of TOP stikers are out there without paying way over the odds??

Oh my GOD please no. Not Bendtner, I thought that Bayern Munich were putting a 12m offer in for him??? Must be rubbish as I think Mr Wenger would have called a taxi for him there and then.

    NOT US PLEASE.

The trick with loanees is too get them up here and while they are here Bruce/Quinn/Short sell the club to the loanee and the loanee falls in love with Sunderland and the fans, which I believe we kind of done with Ned & Danny as I'm sure we are their first destination if they get told they are bench warmers next season

This is verbatum (ish, my Spanish ain't perfect), from Marca...

'Old Sevilla target Niklas Bendtner is almost signed for Sunderland as Arsenal refuse to drop there extreme demands and see a loan deal as beneficial with a view to securing the target figure in 12 months'

No clue if it's true or not.

Sounds like they want him off their wage bill BB which says to me he is on big money probably too big for our wage structure. Mind you still wouldn't take him big head big attitude but not a big scorer and that is no good whatsoever for SAFC.

The good things about loanee players:

    1] something to prove
    2] no transfer fee
3] can get shot if it doesn't work out
4] raise overall quality of the squad
5] develop good relations with transferor club
6] loaned players spread good word about SAFC
7] can sometimes agree purchase clause

The bad things about loanee players:

a] only here temporarily (but see 3] & 7] above)

I think I fall in line with most of you and yes a perm deal is best but a few loans is not a problem, 5 may well be because it just means a big rebuild every summer.

Mind I get the feeling someone is lined up if Bruce is talking about it.
