https://twitter.com/SouthamptonFC/status/486283558021914624/photo/1 Five years since ML saved our club. A special date in Saints hearts. Such a short time in history but also seems like forever. The day that changed us and started one of the best periods of our football history. Onwards and Upwards. Thanks, Markus.
Its been an amazing 5 years, pity Markus left the party so early. As a man of great principles, I wonder what he would have thought about the attitude and actions of some of our current and former players? Great man.
He would be proud of his daughter for carrying on with the plan and pleased that Saints were now approaching their third season in the EPL five years later. However, as such a decent man, he'd be amazed at player behaviour.
Forget the rubbish from some if those greedy people, hail Saint Markus. Thank you Markus. Never forgotten. Always with us. True Gentleman.
As is so often the case, I find myself following in the wake of Fran and yourself, FLT. Great post and perfect response.
I'd love to know what he'd think about the Cortese falling out. Considering he and Nicola had a shared vision for the club, I think there's a good chance Kat isn't doing it all according to Daddy's plans.
Something we will never know....he may have been unhappy as well. I thought that he and Nicola went back a long way, but apparently NC was introduced to Markus when he was looking for financial backing for the Saints purchase. They must have hit it off straight away. Everyone thinks that Markus would have been more susceptible to Nicola's plans, but let's not forget that Katharina has put a lot of money in over the years.
Markus? He could be up there watching to see if we are still worthy? (He won't be impressed with some of our fainthearts), methinks.
I say this every year, but what a shame it was for Markus to not be around to see most of the journey. It's been excellent, it's going to be excellent ... thank you for everything Saint Markus. Hope we did you proud.
It would be interesting to know - but i doubt that we the fans will ever know the in & outs of running the business. Marcus obviously trusted NC implicitly when the Great Project commenced 5 years ago today, but after the unfortunate death of Marcus i wonder if NC totally kept to the script that his boss had laid out ? Marcus may well be up there nodding approval for the way his daughter has handled things - for all we know. Whatever SFC and us the fans would not be where we are now without the great man himself coming on the scene 5 years ago.
Marcus may have had more luck than his daughter did in persuading Cortese to wind his neck in, without actually putting his head on the block. Who knows?
She's only spending her dad's money, but yeah, I'm still grateful she hasn't just run off with it. This is why the "wait and see" reasoning doesn't sit well with me. We can wait forever and we'll never see. What's going on behind the scenes will never be totally clear so we can only speculate and go with the bits and pieces we hear from the media.
Luckily for everyone else, your opinion is utterly meaningless. To those who appreciate where we've come from, I salute you. To those who "demand" more but don't do little to support the club, I don't.
The reason it makes sense to "wait and see" is because evidence accumulates over time. Four weeks ago, with the shock transfer of Rickie Lambert, a straight asset strip did look like a possibility. The evidence that's accumulated in the short space of time since then (appointment of Koeman, links to Tadic, Pelle etc) pretty much rules out that option. So of course it makes sense to wait and see, because as you wait, you learn. And one of the things you learn is that it rarely pays to rush to judgement. But you're young, you don't know that yet.
What I obviously mean is that while evidence accumulates a full picture is never formed. You're forever waiting and seeing. There's no harm in speculating as you go, so long as you don't forget it is just speculation.
It will always be wait & see - no company, even a football club, is going to reveal all the ins & outs of running the business. Im afraid that you have years of speculating ahead of you Joe ! But if Marcus hadnt turned up there may not have been anything much to speculate about !
