I like the "another Southampton Exit" as if that one was never going to be on the cards anyway.
If we have got anywhere the kind of transfer budget reported then why are we not being linked with a higher calibre of player? Tadic being an exception as he does look to be a very useful player but i would like to see us buy a decent striker in like Benteke or Bony? Just a thought...
Using conservative estimates...
30 (base) + 4 (lambert) + 27 (shaw) + 20 (lallana) + 20 (lovren) + 6 (osvaldo) = £107m.
Because we are not just needing to replace what we had like for like in numbers. It showed last season that we need a larger squad so we will be buying more players than we sell with some of them being squad players.
Also being linked doesn't really mean we are going to buy them. Some are made up rumours, some may be just to test waters and not put all our eggs in one basket, some may even be to distract attention from our actual main targets.
Benteke would want more money than we are wanting to pay and was garbage for most of last season after not being allowed to be sold (sound familiar) and Bony will draw the attentions of CL clubs. We can try and compete but it's unlikely.
At the end of the day we are Saints trying to build a squad. We aren't Real Madrid signing this year's galactico just for the sake of appeasing supporters.
but benteke/bony would be 20m+ signings.

we need to sign 2 strikers anyway but some of the squad positions can be taken up by some of the youth players.
As you say we do not have the lure of CL or EL football this season nor will we pay ridiculous wages so we need to be smart in the transfer market.
hmm i don't think id consider benteke or bony Real Madrid quality..
We were able to tempt players last season without CL football like Osvlado (albeit that signing didnt really work out)

we didn't tempt osvaldo. he wanted out of roma and roma wanted him out. we were the only mugs willing to pay roma's price and a soft employer for osvaldo to muck about and get a cheaper transfer to his eventual destination.
The "big" players won't come to us because they consider us a small club. It doesn't help matters that club appears to be in quite a bit of turmoil right now.
And it's not just the fee but also meeting the wages. The extra wages a 30m player would want would have to come out of the transfer kitty, plus agent fees, etc. effectively making them a 40m player.

I wasn't suggesting that Benteke or Bony are Real Madrid quality, just the suggestion why are we not buying top top players instead of the quite good that we are. We have loads of money but like I say to my wife (when she is putting all the 'only a pound' item into the trolley) It all adds up.
£120m could buy us 10 very good players or 4 top top players. That is factoring in that top top players will also cost more in wages as well as transfers
And no I haven't done any real calculation on that, it is a crude guesstimate off the top of my head.
As for using all the youth players as squad players? That went down really well on here and TSW last season. Have we all changed our minds?
No problem with 3 or 4 of the youth players that are close to breaking into the team getting on the bench / squad but we need more depth in the squad than last season. I am pretty sure that Katharin, Les and Koeman will not be thinking 'we'll be looking to survive' as some are suggesting on here. they will be trying to move forward from where we were. 8th. They will be optimistic about getting in the right players to carry on from where 'the last lot' left off.
