fifa has set a precedent now though, thats the only problem with the ban imho, so now lets say joey barton lashes out at someone again? he has done that multiple times so should he get 4 month ban? and the fact that it happened on international duty does that mean if they commited the same offence in domestic leagues should he get banned from all activity! not sticking up for him as he only has himself to blame! its on a world stage with millions of people watching, maybe in schools ect and he should control himself as he should be a role modle, but elbowing someone shows the same kind of intent when they look behind first so why not punish them the same is what other people will try and say in the future its opend a can of worms imo

FIFA dealt with an unusual incident under their control and issued a punishment that is within their remit; the normal striking, elbowing etc carry a punishment of red cards and bans that all footballing authorities sign up to. FIFA's total football ban was pretty effective, but the player will not starve as there will always be clubs desperate enough for his service at his price.
