There is an argument that young talented English players arent getting a chance due to the number of foreigners in the English game. If you buy into this argument then a possible solution would be if more English players played abroad there would be more places in domestic teams for the young English players coming through to play, or the other side of the argument is that those places would just be filled with even more foreign players.

The other argument is that foreign clubs have a different/better mentality when playing compared to English clubs and English players could benefit from experiencing this

That just looks like typical England fan apocalyptic over-reaction to being knocked out. We're English ffs it's supposed to be the foreigners who can't cope with losing.

As I pointed out earlier. We completely outpassed Uruguay - that's based on the stats. Obviously it didn't help us but your claim that we can't pass accurately is just bollocks as were far better at passing than them in the game (FACT). Why can't we ever just lose because we made a couple of bad mistakes instead of all this exaggerated nonsense about us being total ****, the manager's a **** and the players don't care, etc. etc.

As I also pointed out earlier, Spain have failed at this tournament much more dramatically than us, they didn't play well in either game and were arguably favourites going into the tournament. But they won't be going on about a radical overhaul of Spanish football, they've just had a bad tournament. Realistically, this is our first bad tournament exit in a long time. I know everyone thinks the quarter-finals is a failure but it really isn't that bad.

People just need to be realistic, like we are with City, and accept that sometimes you can play well and lose. We've clearly got weaknesses to work on, and they'll do that. The progress from our performances at Euro 2012 where we were on the back foot defending all the time, to our performances now is encouraging, keep that going over the next two years and we'll be competing in the knockout stages again at the next Euros. Yes we lost last night and yes we have some problems, but don't exaggerate it.



This also reminded me of City, we seemed to be able to get it out wide and cross better than anything else, but it didn't suit the strikers at all.

No, ok it's a view I have held for a long time. It's not post exit of the World Cup. If anything, I actually aren't really bothered about how well we do or don't do. Club football is and always will be far more important to me than how the national side perform.

They have a grass roots system that works - they just tried to push an ageing squad too far, you can guarantee Spain will win another tournament long before we do. You do also realise the 2 major European Club trophies were both won by Spanish teams?

Passing to each other has not been an issue. We were much better than Uruguay at passing last night, but we still lost. Those are facts.

I agree the possession wasn't effective and that's one of our problems, we aren't good enough in an attack v defence situation. Our only goal in both games came on the counter. However we also conceded three times on the counter across the two games (so defending the counter is another of our problems). Possession has evidently become less important in the last few years, it's the same at all levels. Look at Bayern and Barca in the Champions League when they came across faster, more incisive, counter attacking sides.

I'm not under the impression that we're perfect or even particularly good. But we're decent-ish. The lazy typical England fan assertion you keep making that we can't pass is simply wrong and facts prove it's wrong. All I'm trying to point out is that we're nowhere near as bad as we want to think. For some reason a lot of England fans take comfort in massively exaggerated criticism of the team when we lose.

These stats seem to fluctuate depending on where you look. I've even seen the same news source show conflicting stats on screen at the same time. The one I quoted was from SSN this morning.

That's because there are not many foreign players playing in their own home leagues. I'm not sure about Spain but in Italy only 3 out of 11 on the pitch can be foreign.

English players love to do ProZone passes: short passes back and forth which increase the "impressive" statistics for those who are fooled by such matters.

Not every pass has to be risky but it should be necessary.

So you would've played 2 LBs?

Hart is our best keeper. Not sure where'd you get better. Also - star jumps? If I'm right, Schmeichel used to do loads of them. Was he not good enough?

I think you actually need to read your post again.

You can play with right footed players on the left in an attacking position because they can cut in. In defence, you need someone who will always have his proper foot on the correct side.


My suggestion would be to play a RB at RB.

Just in reference to your earlier point about 68% possession. Like we should have won because we had more of the ball, which we may have done, but it was in harmless areas. I'd rather have had 40% possession with most of it being constructive in the opposition penalty area - but we didn't.

Anyway, stats don't win games, goals do. If we'd have been lucky enough to have a player as good as Suarez (a not fully fit one either) we'd probably have progressed to the latter stages.

I would love to know how a country as small as Uruguay currently have two of the best strikers in world football in Cavani and Suarez. The male population of Uruguay is 1.75m - it's crazy.

I don't think they do compared to the EPL. Regularly some of our top teams don't have one English starter. If every Italian team starts with at least 8 Italians there will be a big difference.

You can play with right footed players on the left in an attacking position because they can cut in. In defence, you need someone who will always have his proper foot on the correct side.

Both La Liga and Serie A have around 50% foreign players. The Prem has about 60%.

That is still a large portion of the players in Spain and Italy, the gap is not as big as some people like to make out.

The difference is that the English players aren't good enough. Not that there are too many foreigners. That is just a **** excuse for a poor team.

Brehme played both fullback positions quite often. Shaw has NEVER played RB.
