Good luck to Matty but (and it's not just his fault) he has been at the club when the strikers have consistently failed to score for season after season, hopefully with Aluko/Long/Jelavic next season we can finally put this right. Only skipped over the comments but those 3 strikers are the level we need, one more to match them and we will be in for a great season. I'm undecided on Sagbo but again he might benefit from his one season in British football, he has the makings of a top striker if he has learnt from everything last year and has more potential than Fryatt.

Always rated Fryatt, great player for us, and that message shows he's a top lad too.

A lot footballers have shown zero interest at City over the years, but taken big wages. Matty put his heart and soul into it, delivered, and is a gent.

I'm afraid we've ****ed up big style. Matty was the the best striker we had. I think a lot of peoples opinions are heavily influenced by big price tags and fancy/exotic names.

Jelavic is alright, but he's not as good as Fryatt, who should have been given the chance to prove he should be the first choice striker next season.

Crikey, after 5 pages I've found someone to agree with.

Fryatt is better than Jelavic. He holds up the ball better and does more outside the box. Also think he's better at finishing too. Jelavic not a bad player but, pretty scruffy and gives ball away cheaply. Hope he scores the goals to justify the price but I'm not too sure he will.

I must admit I agree too. I wouldnt say Jelly has been a flop, he popped up with a few valuable goals, but I'm expecting to see more from him (and Long) more season considering their price tag and wages - both massive outlays for a club out size, hopefully they deliver.

Always seemed a bit odd when he was interviewed.

Then I realised it was because he thought about the question and gave an honest answer which floored the interviewer or journalist.

Hr doesn't do the self-aggrandising thing or tedious insincere soundbites.

Sorry but I completely disagree with that.

Fryatt can nick a goal in the box, but the difference between him up front and Jelavic/Long is massive. When the latter two play, the ball sticks up front and we cause teams problems just with the runs they make and their linkup play. When Fryatt plays up front at this level he hasn't got the pace or strength to worry defences at all. They just hold him at arms length and his impact is limited to closing them down. In the cup final everyone said he played well, but I thought our biggest problem was the fact we couldn't hold the ball at all and spent 112 minutes just defending continuously with Fryatt and Quinn fruitlessly chasing shadows up front.

He's been good for us overall and should be remembered fondly, but he's way out of his depth at this level sadly.

I probably criticise donkavic's 'ability' more than anyone ever has, but the simple truth is that Jelavic has one of two vital ingredients for the premier league - immense strength.

The other is pace. You only need one or the other but Fryatt has neither and whilst that doesn't really hinder his goal scoring potential it does render him pretty much useless in general play.

Don't get me wrong I'd much rather we'd kept Fryatt as you need 2 strikers with that nous to get in the right place at the right time and bag a goal, specially with the enormous schedule we'll be lumped with next season, but he would never overtake Jelavic in the pecking order.

Maybe if we were a stronger side who could afford to carry a passenger goal poacher then I would prefer Fryatt over Jelavic as he's certainly a better footballer, but then if we were in a position to do that we'd be able to get our hands on a far higher calibre of player than either of them so it's a rather moot point.
 
To compare Jelavic with Matty is fundamentally wrong; whilst they are both there to score goals they do very different jobs for the team. Matty should be compared with Long if anybody and I know who I prefer in the starting eleven. Playing up front is also about partnerships and Jelo and Long look good together and complement one another.

If we play only one up front then for me out of Jelavic, Long and Matty I know who would be number 3 out of them, hence the move for Matty now he's fit again is a good one for many reasons.
 
The ball didn't always stick up front with Jelavic, and he and Long worked together well sometimes but not at other times. You need competition, and I don't want the situation where people's names automatically go on the teamsheet whatever their performance.
