Pochettino in

Discussion in 'Tottenham Hotspur' started by Rebelspur, May 27, 2014.

  1. I cannot wait for the day when the game is ref'd by robots. There'll be no back-chat, then. Imagine it, lads...

    (Ref blows for an infringement)

Rooney: (face creased with hate) What the f**k did I do, ref?

Ref: (sounding not unlike a Dalek, if you will) In-fringe-ment! Free-kick awarded to the other team!

Rooney: (Now, in the ref's face) You f**king blind, you one-eyed t**t!

Ref: In-fringe-ment! Free-kick! Step back or you will be ex-ter-min-a-ted!

Rooney: What have I f**king done, you pimpled ice-cream cone?

(Giggsy, Ferdinand, Valencia, Wellbeck and Nani now get involved)

Ref: Step back! Step back (the ref is going ape-****)

Rooney: You are a ****, ref!

    (Nani and the others agree)

    Ref: Ex-term-in-ate! Ex-term-in-ate!

I think the game would be much better for Dalek refs.

Not sure but the club won't unveil him until later in the summer. What I will say is reports suggests his top priority is to find a decent left back. Finally... a gaffer who can see one of our biggest problems we've been banging on about for ages now. So Poch goes up one notch in my book

Wasn't De Boer called a prick for speaking in 3rd person? seems we have another!

Although I agree with his views on the Europa League, yet ironically most of the fans that are in favour of Pochettino disagree with his views, lets see if hes been told to treat the competition differently.

That's not 3rd person. With Frank De Boer, it could have easily been his brother being interviewed and no one realised so thought him talking about "what Frank wants" was weird :D

Pochettino's our saviour so it's blasphemous to question his words.

To be honest, what his preferences were at Southampton is not all that relevent. A manager might express a preference for competing in the trophies rather than getting top half in the league, that wouldn't mean if they joined Spurs that they'd feel the same way. Pochettino has said he's seen the Europa League kill clubs and who can argue? There have been plenty who have given the competition a go in recent years and found themselves battling relegation for their trouble. If he feels that we'd be better off out of it then I definitely disagree but as it stands he hasn't said that.

Technically its not 3rd person but anyone who refers to themselves by name means they sound like a prick, even if hes our "saviour" <yikes>

But as for his views on the Europa League, he will find it near on impossible to maintain a top four challenge and reach the final of the Europa league (giving us two chances of CL qualification) and very few clubs can set out to win the Europa League and also meet their league ambitions, unless its a team from an inferior European league with little competition, or Chelsea with a big squad.

As the winner next season is rewarded with a CL slot then I see the attraction but a knock out competition to get CL football will mean other teams around Europe also will be viewing the competition as a more serious option, especially if any CL knock out teams are struggling in their domestic league.

We have a big squad, it's just a bit unbalanced at the moment with the 240 midfielders and -1.20 left backs.

I could forgive AVB and the "tremendous dimensions" chat so I'll forgive Pochettino for that. Also if it was the translator then how do we know that's what Pochettino actually said? I bet that crafty translator is the one that hates the Europa League really :D

Any update on if we gave him a five year contract as-well!

Found this video on a sky sports article

He looks a tad embarrassed there, hes probably a nice guy and may be the players mate (like Avb was, well apart from EKotto & Adebayor).

I wonder if a team from England, Spain, Italy, France or Germany have ever started in the Europa League, won it and also finished top 4 in their league. I'm not counting Chelsea because they dropped from the Champions League so didn't have to play in the playoff round and then have a group with long trips to Romania, Moldova etc.

A Madrid won the EL in 2011 but finished 5th.

They also won the EL in 2009 but finished 9th.

Sevilla just won the EL and finished 5th, They also won the EL in 2005 (5th in the league) ...although they wrecked it for me as in 2006-07 they also won the EL and finished 3rd! Valencia also won the league title and the EL in 2003-04.

So history wise it can be done but really my comments where about today as the leagues are getting stronger, there is more competition then ever before in terms of the top four and top 7 places (in our league) and I can't see how we could be good enough to get to the EL final while also managing the squad to finish top four (in case we failed to win the EL).

Porto must have done it under Mourinho, as they won UEFA and then CL I think. Where did AVB finish when he won it? Although probably not difficult to qualify for the CL for the top Portugese teams

Yes, but we don't count them leagues, its more about the leagues where you have 5-7 quality teams at the top and you get to that stage where juggling Europe (and domestic) football causes extreme pressure and unless you're equipped to deal with both then a collapse can happen, as we saw under Avb!

Until Van Gaal was tipped off about Moyes getting sacked, he wasn't then as keen on our fantastic white shirts!

Boss - I am detecting that you are already being a bit too negative about Pochettino.

Maybe he'll work, maybe he won't. The thing that the last ten years or so have shown is that it's bloody hard to predict who'll work and who won't. Santini and Ramos were supposed to be something special weren't they? Wasn't Harry just a trusted old hand that could save a sinking ship but had never had experience of winning things with big clubs? Who expected him to take us into the latter stages of the CL beating some of Europe's finest along the way and playing some of the best football we've seen for years?

As (I think) you've said - so much depends on this very nebulous quality of a man just "fitting". Who the hell knows? Maybe Poch will be one of those fits. I've literally got about as much expectation of Poch to succeed as LVG (who tasted success with some of the richest, most successful teams in their respective countries but how would he handle a club like Spurs?). You never know.

Hey - at least the guy has some EPL experience. Last time we appointed one of those* we got Harry. Mind you the one before that was Hoddle...

    * Hey - good point though. IN the last 20 years we've appointed managers with PL experience only four times - Francis, Graham, Hoddle and Harry. Five if we include AVB too, which i guess we should, just about! And five with no EPL experience (six if you stick AVB in this category). Well there goes that theory! Seems Spurs are just as crap at appointing managers with EPL experience as those without. Out of any five one's a Harry or a Jol. At least the odds are better than Russian Roulette. Slightly.

And come on! Can no-one else see how that guy standing next to Poch (the translator) is actually Richard Nixon?!

Lenny try not to make too much sense as I may start to go easy on Pochettino! I am being too negative but what can I say? I just don't feel the appointment is right, plus YV is being far too positive so naturally that means I must be too negative :D

I know you mentioned before that you didn't believe LVG would do a better job then Sherwood (not wanting to mis quote you) but I gathered you weren't being swayed by a certain level of experience as there was no real facts to suggest LVG would be a better fit then Sherwood? so I take your point that being fair and looking at which managers work (for all clubs)then there is as much chance of Pochettino being a good fit as anyone else, as basically we're just throwing darts and hoping one hits the bullseye (as powerspurs likes to say).

...Yet, still, I'm not keen and just have the same type of negative feeling I had towards Avb.

I expect nothing and this will not lead to disappointment.

He sounds to have the same philosophy as AVB and that did not impress me. Perhaps he will adapt according to the players he has at his disposal. That would do for starters.

    Similar expectations but higher hopes!

Not sure what you mean by 'philosophy' but to be successful in today's game we need a coach who is able to analyse the mass of data that is around and find some better ways of setting the team up.

On the last point I've come to the opinion that there is actually little difference between the skill set of different groups of players of the same sort of value: so I hope he gets them to adapt rather than adapts to them!

Pay attention Power. We're discussing the Europa league and finishing in the top four. Redknapp is the only PL manager to get us into the top four. AVB had that chance but attempted to win both the Europa league and finish top four and promptly took us to 5th.
