It's significant because whatever proportion of that was spent on capital (and I have no idea what proportion that is) still remains and has the value of the club at a higher level than it would be had said capital never been purchased. To put it simply, if he invested at all in facilities, presumably those facilities are still there and are worth more than the previous ones.
long term it tends towards zero and most of it was frittered away on players IIRC.

for villa and lerner it is now long term. they are comparitively no better off than when he started pouring money down the sink.

The rise in the value of the club will be due to nothing but inflation.

And add in a far larger TV revenue.

My point did include that the investment does move towards zero over time. That's a pretty big part of my "investment in football clubs isn't profitable" argument.

and thusly, that investment isn't worth considering as a factor in your argument to inflate villa's valuation in relation to ours.

if anything it demonstrates that we have an asset that is not yet depreciated that might raise ours in the short term.

Well no, because though the value of that investment has undoubtedly decreased over time, it surely hasn't reached zero. Remnants of Lerner investment will be at Villa for a long time yet. And technically (very technically) it starts to depreciate as soon as it's made. And yeah, the training ground raises the club's value, but not by more than what was spent on it. Hence no profit from that investment.

I think we should have a standing stickied thread called PTF's Corner or some such where all the debates people get into with him can be moved to, once a discussion on another thread rolls onto the second or third page one of the parties can go 'Wanna take this to the corner?'... It'll be great fun.

and PTF won't participate.

Haha, well if you were worried about that all you had to do was admit £200m was a huge exaggeration when I first questioned it.

First off, I admitted that it may not be as high as 200 some time ago. Second, the word "may" is very important there.

I really, really like this idea. Can we just call the thread "Outside", so I can go "you want to take this outside?!"

Yeah let's do it, then me, FLT and Joe can all gang up on him. :emoticon-0116-evilg

i think they sold most of them off at a loss tbh. what remains is probably just a drain.

Well I assume some players are there who wouldn't be otherwise. They're worth something. Could it be claimed he played a part in producing good young talent? He certainly was insistent on focusing on it.

look at the squad. are they comparable to ours favourably?

compare their infrastructure excluding the stadium. Is theirs likely to be worth more than a bleeding edge setup only recently finished?

I don't see how you can claim that lerner's £300m spent makes villa relatively worth more today.

my view, it was pissed away on chasing a dream (money).
