Be nice if an overpaid footballer actually took a pay cut in order to further his footballing career, but won't happen. Most would rather sit out a fat contract....I understand that on one level, because we would want the best remuneration that we could get, but most of us don't have careers that finish in our early thirties. Blink and a footballer's career has gone.

He'll still be overpaid if he took a pay cut :-)

I expect Welbeck will see who takes over united before making any decisions. Being mainly on the united bench has not affected his world cup chances. I believe he is a local lad and probably a united fan so leaving would not be easy and United would probably like to keep him.

As for Saints; the wages of players coming from Big clubs could be a stumbling block for us, but I believe we should hold firm. If a player is willing to take a pay cut then thats a good sign of his future commitment to the team and desire to play football

I think Barry's contract is up this summer. He's 33 though so they may want a younger guy.

Footballers don't age like we do....they stay at a club for ever and yet mysteriously are always 25...eg. Schneiderlin

Never noticed that before. To expand it, they are under 20 for years, 25 for a decade then suddenly they are over 30.

I may choose to age like that. Sadly, I'd need a supernova-powered timewarp to go that far back...
