Levys next move needs to be the unveiling of a coach/manager that helps the club get back on track. This needs to be done pronto. - Even if the manager doesn't begin working with us until the summer. An announcement could do everyone the world of good.
There's been some horrendous footballing decisions made recently, which has seen us just plod along, whilst blowing £100m. Some may say we've gone backwards. - whatever, that's a different discussion.
Levy has got to pull something out of the bag NOW, for us to stand any chance of keeping our "best" players. We can't afford to lose the likes of Sandro, Lloris, Vetonghen etc. We have to prevent it resulting in transfer requests.
Whilst some might have odd moan about Lloris and his distribution, or Vertonghen's performances, we simply cannot have the spine of our team ripped out, resulting in even more new blood joining the club. This season has proven how difficult it is to integrate so many new players, and it's been made worse by the fact we've sacked our manager with no plan in place. it's been a total and utter mess. Levy is the only one with the power to sort this **** out, whether he's the right person or not! (another discussion altogether).
As others have said, these players could well be looking for the exit door and we've got to do all we can to keep them, just like Liverpool did with Suarez.
If we can sign a new manager NOW, ready for next season, this might help us retain these players. In addition, it might also take the pressure off, as the players will know what the plan is going forward. Also the fans might not be quite so tense, which can't be good for the players right now.
Going back to the individual players themselves though, any team is always going to consist of "squad players". - The one's who are on the fringe, but do a job when needed. The problem we've got, is some of the squad players aren't good enough for a club that want a top 4 finish. Yet they feature so regularly and don't do the job required.
I always ask myself if a certain player would get into the match day squad of one of our rivals. We have quite a few that wouldn't. - and these players are playing far too regularly.
Naughton. - Feel a bit sorry for him as he's usually out of position. But regardless, he's 1 man out of 11 who takes up a place on the pitch. He's not playing well enough, whether its his fault or not.
Dawson. - Hate to say it as he's been one of my favourite players for years, but he's been shocking for most of this season.
Bentaleb - Young, shouldn't be playing as much as he is. We've got no reason to be experimenting with this kid so much, especially with so much at stake. He should have been integrated slower. As a result, it's another new midfielder that the team are having to get used to on match day, when it's been hard enough this season already, due to so many new faces.
Rose - just not good enough to play LB for a club who want to finish top 4.
(Townsend has just about escaped my rant, as he is a good enough squad player, even if he is incredibly infuriating.)
Then there's...
Sigurdsson At least he's not been in the squad much recently. He'll definitely be off in the summer. Done very little since joining.
Fryers - seriously, is this kid ever going to play? if not, why have we still got him?
We've got too much quantity, and not enough quality cover.
These players are all mid table players, with the exception of Bentaleb who we don't know enough about yet. - But he still wouldn't make it into the squad of any of our rivals.
I'm not saying we should have a squad that is full of world class stars. That's never going to happen. But we're at the other end of the spectrum and have too many that aren't up to par.
It's very unfortunate that our new signings have offered us very little in their first season, but regardless, it shows just how average our back up players also are.
We're 5th mainly because of 2 people. Lloris and Adebayor. - and god help us if Ade decides to have a sulk, which is inevitable.
The more I think about it, the more it amazes me how we're in 5th place.
