Bet Pochettino still says we're not buying.

Pochettino says no bids for Shaw or Osvaldo. Club does not want to lose either player.

Pochettino: "We have no intention whatsoever to sign any players. There's twenty-two days left, so that might change. But at this moment in time, in theory, we have no intention to buy."

I notice he didn't answer the question about whether there had been bids for any of our players.

Also left himself a lot of wiggle room regarding transfers in. Sounds like another non-answer really!

Personally I'm slightly unhappy with that. Still think we could do with a couple of additions but we have to accept that MP knows best!

It doesn't mean anything. Reading between the lines it might even be inferred that we are signing someone as he made a point of saying we might change our minds, which he hasn't done before.

If we don't sign at least one additional quality CD then it's a declaration that finishing somewhere between 9-12 is our ambition for this season as we have seen how frail our squad is especially in the centre of defence.

Yes I have to agree. You can't expect Fonte and Dejn to stay injury free so if we dont bring anyone in it shows NC and MP are content with top 10 this season.

I think even with an additional quality CB it is unlikely we over take anyone above us except Newcastle

If we don't sign a quality centre-back, I don't think it necessarily means Cortese has settled for 9-12th place, it might mean that they feel that there was no-one available for the right price.

Funny that you assume it's Cortese making that decision. Pochettino probably still has faith in Yoshida and Hooiveld and thinks he can get more out of them.

I do think that we've been unlucky as Yoshida would be expected to be good back up, but when he's been brought in he's been rusty. Gazzaniga looked OK last season bar a few games, but was awful this year. Hooiveld has had many chances this season to impress and hasn't taken any of them. Providing JH and MY stay, I'm not that concerned as with Boruc back alone, we'll have let in half the goals Gazzaniga did, and there shouldn't be too many injuries to Loven and Fonte. I'd wait until the summer for a quality CB and allow Lovren and Fonte to blossom together for a bit longer. We still are in the top 5/6/7 defences in the league, above Spurs and Man Utd! Any good CBs in the Academy?

Probably true, Tottenham is a very long shot if Sherwood cocks it up but they are a lot of points away.

IMO getting a very good CD in now isn't about moving up (although I agree it's probably only Newcastle we can overtake), it's about holding onto 9th place as there are a number of clubs catching us up after the car crash period we are in

Do you really think so? I think MP is probably trying to keep their morale and confidence up, and I suppose he does think he can get a bit more out of them. But I think he knows they aren't good enough. It's just that we might not be able to make for the type of CB we'd like want this window.

With half the season left, a 10 point gap is definitely closable. Whether we get the results we need, and spurs slip up, is another matter of course. Teams regularly go up and down by more than that in a half-season though.
