We've not really had the opportunity. A player would have to be pretty far down the pecking order to move to a newly promoted side. Then we were a struggling side with a new manager last January. That has only given us the summer, but we still were not established and teams are unlikely to sell to their rivals.
Now I think after our good start that a squad player from a top team or a player from a struggling PL team maybe tempted. If the price is right I wouldn't rule out the domestic market.

happy 1000th post, and happy 1000th reply to me

It's not necessarily the purchase price that's the problem with buying existing premiership players, it's the wages.
Saints are by no means a top payer, even second string players from the top clubs earn double, treble or more than they will earn with us.
Good quality foreign players like Lovren look at coming to us as a real earner so that's where we will have to concentrate our efforts

Saints players tend to be grateful to play for us...haven't signed a big 'I AM' player yet under Cortese. So we are looking for players that will work very hard and achieve their potential with us...don't want any players intending to coast and then sulk if it doesn't work out for them.

Spot on! That's why it is not working out for Gaston and the jury is still out on Osvaldo?

I was thinking this the other day, the players that have done really well for us have really wanted to be here. I am not saying Ramirez and Osvaldo dislike it here but it was certainly hard to get them through the door. Whereas players that have really wanted it have done much better. However this is a stupid point to make as not many world class players have there heart set on Southampton, just an observation!

This is what I feel. The players we sign have to be young and talented enough and eager to learn. We are their big chance and with us they become better than before, therefore they are happy. Can be more difficult to integrate a player who is more of a star and happy with the way they play...they think they can just carry on playing in their own style and others will fit in. I'm not suggesting they would all be troublemakers, but they may feel unsettled....could almost seem to a player like Ramirez that they have been demoted.

Anderlecht defender Cheikhou Kouyate is attracting interest from Liverpool, Arsenal, Southampton and Manchester City according to the player's agent.

"I have been in talks with representatives from Liverpool and Arsenal," Saffet Balkan told Turkish-football.com.

"Southampton and Manchester City have also been in contact with me over him.

"It's very likely that he will be joining a Premier League club soon."

The Senegal centre-back, 24, has made 27 appearance for his club this year and impressed playing for his country at the London 2012 Olympics.

Senegal = African = African League of Nations Cup = loose players mid season and come back injured or exhausted if their nation progresses which Senegal usually do
Rather stick to Astori who will only get called up by Italy at the same time as another european and won't have to travel half way round the world for an international

Kouyate would be good. I don't think the AFCON distraction would be too much of a problem if we had Lovren and Fonte fit.
