Why don't the powers that be just ignore the transfer window this time round .

We have a squad capable of a top half finish IMHO , and surely it would send out a MASSIVE positive vibe to all current players and possible future targets , that SFC are big time into giving players time ?

See where we are at the end of the season , and try and buy where required .

We have a pretty thin squad. Bringing in one or two new players doesn't necessarily equate to others being frozen out.

because the target is more than finish in the top half

We've seen over the past two months that, with our squad as it is, a few injuries can mean disaster. We aren't nailed on for the top half if a couple players going missing means that we start achieving less than a point a game.

As for demonstrating to current and prospective players our commitment, do you think that most of the current players want us to ride with Hooiveld, Fox, Gazzaniga, etc? Would prospective players have any idea?

Further to this, we're only 4 points off Europe, so why shouldn't we try to push for it if it's clear we can compete with the best?

Depends entirely on what and who is available at a feasible price.

Would this thread exist if we had drawn 0-0 to Cardiff?

I don't think we should panic buy or add players for the sake of it especially as we would rather develop our young players who will have less of a chance if our squad is too thick.

I think we will be trying to offload fringe players more than anything else.

Doesn't matter what we think...only person that counts is the Don. Only he knows what our financial position is (okay plus his financial team if we are being pedantic). We are probably safe from relegation and have a very thin chance of being top six (and in Europe). He might choose to spend money if we have it, but would he (under present circumstances) want to spend money we didn't have? Can't see any desperate buys, though loans might be brought in.

I wouldn't blame Mauricio if he wanted to wait until the summer to make any signings. The squad is thin in certain areas but is still more than capable of a top half finish, and there may be better players available to us in the summer. Is a push for a Europa League spot really that important to us this season? In the long run our squad may be better for waiting until the summer and properly deliberating over transfers.

We've probably been lining up targets since October. I don't see us panic buying. Would like a CB but who wouldn't eh? Keeper can wait till summer. We may not purchase anyone but the window will not be ignored.

One defender and perhaps a loan attacking mid would make a considerable difference, and shouldn't really necessitate anything panicky.

I think to ignore it would be extremely naive. The last month or so has shown how thin our squad is, particularly defensively of quality when we have injuries.

Loans I could definitely get on board with. As much as I feel like we need a new attacking midfielder, if we buy one in January, we may end up regretting it when summer comes around and there's a much better one available who we no longer have room for.

I've said a few times that I'll be very surprised if we buy in January. Our squad may lack depth but we've also suffered a pretty freakishly bad set of injuries that seem to have dragged on for a while. Two key players with broken bones is pretty poor luck plus whatever's been up with Jose seems to have lasted awhiles.

We'll only sign if someone we've been looking at for some time becomes available at the right price. Past seasons of January deals would suggest it isn't a time when teams offload decent players at low prices. In light of that, I think we'll wait till the summer. Even then, I don't expect much; we'll push through from the academy. After all, if Sam Gallagher shines we'll not be looking for a striker in the summer.

I think we're in for dull transfer windows in future. And we need to recalibrate our expectations as fans and see lack of signings as a good thing.

Cue four signings in January and seven in the summer, all breaking the previous record as they roll in...

Tello at Barca might be a fun target in that regard. Not quite sure that they're ready to sell, but he has fallen down the pecking order this season.

Boyata got a rare game for City today, I always thought he was ok. Maybe not what we need.

I just fear what could happen in terms of injuries. We'll only be halfway through the season after the Everton game, and we've already lost several points directly because first team choices have been crocked. Unless we start playing the likes of Reed and Gallagher we could very well end up in a similar position later in the season. If Nicola is serious about challenging for Europe he has to strengthen the squad in the key areas, GK, CB, and some sort of attacking midfielder.
