Its unfortunate in a way that boruc is on top of his game and has maybe another 5 years left. No great understudy will want to come in and warm the bench and the club will not pay big bucks for this. Which gives us 2 options; rookie or veteran. We have both of these and are probably fine forsurvival but not where we want to be.

Im not writing gazza off but this is not ideal for him. Feel he needs a loan to a mid table NPC club with less pressure where he can gain confidence.

I wonder if, with all fit of course, Cork, Morgan and Wanyama could all play together? Would we be taking too much away from our attacking play? How would you play all 3? Who would sit back and who would play slightly further forward? Or is it just not a good idea?

I wouldn't mind seeing Morgan pushed forward more... would be interesting with Cork and Victor behind. Davis has been immense the last couple of games and JWP still offers something; we are healthy in this area.

I think the most important thing for a keeper (after basic talent) is confidence. Boruc looks as if he is going to get the ball which must put attackers off. Gazza looks lightweight and doesn't frighten anyone (except Mauricio and the team). He looks afraid and, sometimes, I feel he is afraid to get hurt. Talented, but I don't think he will ever be a top keeper...I've come out and said it and, as you know, I'm not a person to have a downer on anyone.

Have to agree with that on the evidence thus far.

For the goal yesterday he went in feet 1st. For Agbonlahor's goal he made a token effort. Put Boruc in those one on one situations and he'll wipeout the ball and everything else with it.

Anyway the club know that he is not ready but this is the situation and it's unfortunate to lose two senior keepers to long term injuries at the same time. Gazzaniga's early career is an extraordinary story of determination and he has done incredibly to get to where he is now. I hope that he doesn't think he has made it and he continues to work hard on his game. I think he'll be allowed to move on loan next season and then it's up to him.

Absolutely. But Kelvin Davis isn't a reliable enough no.2 anymore. Theses days, the PL game is too quick for him, and given his experience with Sunderland several seasons back, maybe it always was. I don't see Cody Cropper as someone who can step in yet, although I have little evidence to suggest he can't. I think Gazza must be allowed to have games, that the management will not pressurise him, and that his confidence will come.

We had a similar situation with a promising keeper called Bartosz Bialkowski, who would occasionally put in the odd sterling performance when called upon. Then one game against Blackpool did for him and he eventually left to become the No.1 goalkeeper at Notts County, where he has found a regular playing career at last. Let's not have the same happen to Gazzaniga, eh..?

Feel for bialkowski, most of his stand in performances were awesome. I remember debating at the time 'should he take the no 1 shirt from Kevin'. Then blackpool at home in the league came and we never saw him again. Perhaps there's a lesson there? So boruc comes back, kelv moves to coaching.... who takes over as 2nd keeper? Stick with gazza with him rotting on the bench and throw him from reserve friendlies straight to crucial PL matches? I think he will make more mistakes and it will damage his development.

Probably deserves its own thread but what are the options?
1. Stick with gazza
2. Gazza on loan and top keeper to compete?
3. Gazza on loan and older experienced keeper to be safe hands when needed?

Going on the assumption that people feel SKD is no longer up to the std we require.

At the beginning of the season most would have had Jose, Jos and Yoshie at the same level going on thier performances last season. Lovren has showed us what a difference a good CB makes, and has pushed Jose to the front because of the understanding they have together. For me if Jose does not play then Yoshie should play infront of Jos, not because Yoshie is much better but because Jos has to play on the left and Lovren looks much more at ease on his preferred left and has a good understanding with Shaw. Our best players must play in thier best positions and then the others fill in the blanks

We are a very ambitious club and we need 2 good keepers. Gazza can stay as our third keeper (i.e. usually wouldn't be used). If he is put out on loan, I suspect he will never return. I would love to know the GK coaches opinion....at what point should a young keeper start to shine?

Bialkiwski looked really good in pre-season before the Championship. Had he not made the mistake against West Brom he may well have been given the gloves.

I do think it's strange how we are so reluctant to loan Gazzaniga out (albeit we need him right now). Lots of good keepers have made their careers on loan (usually at Birmingham for some reason): Foster, Hart, Butland (sort of)

Do Birmingham need a keeper now?

I don't think our management team favour loans. I'm sure someone will come up with an exception, but we seem to use loans as a means to reduce the wage bill for someone on their way out. Our players play our style...don't think our best youngsters will be loaned out to other teams to learn bad habits.

I agree with that stance. But surely a keeper is a bit different, the job doesn't change that much despite what the outfield players do? Or am i being ignorant?!

I can only think that the goalkeeping coach wanted him to train alongside Boruc & Davis and learn that way. Of course it could of just been a simple case of no one wanting him on loan who could offer starting football at the right standard.
Britt played for u21s last week and I think both Cropper and Gazza need to be playing good league football next season for the next part of their development. I can't think of a single goalkeeper who has come through an academy and commanded regular 1st team football in the top flight.

I was interested in that last question. Gazza is 21, nearly 22. What other keepers currently in the Premier League were doing when they were 21/22:

De Gea - Established first choice at Atletico Madrid
Lloris - First choice for Nice in Ligue 1
Szczęsny - Established himself as first choice at Arsenal around this age
Hart - Around the Man City first team, had a successful loan spell at Birmingham when 22
Mignolet - First choice at Sint-Truiden in the Belgian second division. Joined Sunderland at 22 and took a little while to establish himself
Cech - First choice at Rennes. Agreed to sign for Chelsea about this time
Howard - In and around the New York/New Jersey MetroStars first team. Played 9 of 28 games at 21. Won MLS GK of the year at 22
Krul - Became first choice at Newcastle at 22
Boruc - Backup at Legia Warsaw. Became first choice around 22/23
Vorm - Seems to have been getting experience on loan at FC Den Bosch in the Dutch second division
Guzan - First choice at Chivas USA
McGregor - Backup at Rangers
Begovic - Backup at Pompey, spent 3 months on loan at Yeovil
Marshall - Backup to Boruc at Celtic but had earlier been first choice (briefly).
Ruddy - On loan somewhere. Had several loan spells before he was 21
Myhill - Had a couple of loans, joined Hull as first choice in Division Three (League 2)
Jääskeläinen - first choice in the Finnish Premier League. Became first choice at Bolton when 23
Speroni - First choice at Dundee I think (but it's not quite clear from wikipedia and I can't be bothered to research it further)
Stekelenburg - Backup at Ajax (played 10 times)
Mannone - Third choice at Arsenal. Had a couple of loan spells at Hull

So most of those keepers - especially the more highly-rated keepers - were playing games (or had played games) at Gazza's age, even if it wasn't in a high quality league.
