De Boer's an interesting suggestion. I thought Barca might have gone in for him, given his history with them.

Yeah I mentioned De Boer as even though he's not vastly experienced in football management, at Ajax, they have a similar philosophy to Spurs in terms of attractive, technical football so his transition to Spurs wouldn't be a complete culture change, he'd just need to understand the pace of English football if much faster. Knowing Vertonghen and Eriksen would also come in handy too.

Paddy Power are just trying to rope in stupid people, they could easily put half of their last at 1,000/1 as there's not even a little chance they'll happen.
This debate has made me think of Clough/Taylor for a couple of reasons.
Firstly that Spurs are exactly the challenge Cloughie would have relished.
Secondly I feel that AVB does not have it in him to be the "front man" a manager has to be.
Just as Peter Taylor was away from the media spotlight getting on with what he did best.

Surprised that Paddy Power aren't taking odds on a Jol/AVB partnership.
What could go wrong? Jol had us playing attractive football, albeit with a weak central midfield that often left the back line exposed, whilst the other plays solid defensive football but without much success up front. I mean, apart from having a central midfield of Zokora and Jenas whilst playing a high line...

Unless Baldini could show that the intended DoF regime does not undermine the
manager as Jol perceived it did, it could never happen on paper.

Why not? It might just be the challenge he wants after doing nothing for 6 months. He must be bored by now. And he likes working with promising young players who need that subtle blend of stick and carrot.

So, an update for the bookies based on tonight:
Frank de Boer led Ajax to a 2-1 victory over Barcelona
Jurgen Klopp led Dortmund to a 3-1 win over Rafa Benitez's Napoli
I was just thinking what a great fit Spurs could be for Bielsa's system: very young players ready to run, some very tough players, and plenty of replacements for the exhaustion and injuries that are liable to ensue. It's a very combative and fan-friendly system--really, half of it is the same thing AVB's doing: play a high line and press. But the other half is to attack as quickly as possible. So the players would be halfway used to it. We'd have a lot of interesting options for a 3-5-2, though I'm not sure what pair of strikers makes much sense.
Of the rest, I'm more impressed with Pochettino than Laudrup, but worried how much of his success is due to the coherence of Southampton's squad. it's a young squad which has matured together, in some cases from their academy. It's really not the team of stranger guns for hire ours is. I also would really not recommend Klinsman. He's sort of squeaked through his US managing thanks largely to the fact that Mexico has been such a spectacular bust that no one has noticed the US losing to tiny, tiny countries much. If we had to have a caretaker I'd go for Hiddink.
However, I would prefer for any number of reasons that the Man City debacle proves to be the kick in the ass the team needs. One is that firing the winningest manager you've ever had a dozen games into the season is unlikely to help you attract the best candidates as replacements.
It's funny that someone who has an impressive record both overall and with us would appear to be more clueless than the fans. The only real explanation I have is that AVB's single system, dull and anti-audacious as it may be, really does work.

A much changed Barca just for some perspective, even the front 5 they have can't compensate for the 2nd string back 5 (Pique excepted)...even Alex Song got a game!
Personally I would prefer to have a manager whose understanding of football was so much better than mine that I couldn't see why he was making the decisions. Hopefully the opposition managers wouldn't be able to get it either and we'd have a big advantage. the default assumption from us fans should be that the manager knows better than us - that's why the great club that we support appointed him as manager in the first place. I'm not against comments, but do it from a position of humility - I'm not fit to clean the boots of even our worst manager.

He s doing such a good job with Everton. AVB does not seem to have what it takes to take you guys to the next level. Would you guys have preferred Martinez given the choice or we're most of you happy with AVB's appointment. At resent he is looking like one of the managers who may not last until January if the negative results continue.
Is he really doing such a great job with Everton? He's still got a lot to prove, in my opinion.
If AVB fails I still wouldn't want someone Martinez.
