Calum Chambers is already a good player and will improve dramatically with game time. However, unless Clynes injury keeps him out for some time, that game time will be limited. I thought Manny Mayuka put away his two chances against Besiktas beautifully (one was wrongly disallowed for offside), and if that performance boosts his confidence it could be him who surprises us this season.
This thread was started by Jose Fonte baby, so I suppose a real surprise hero would be Jose Fonte. What's the betting he forces his way into the starting line-up and plays so well Pochettino can't replace him..? It's perfectly possible. There's nobody more committed to Saints ambition.
I think Chambers will not be backup for Clyne, but will be looking to take Punches place on the right midfield. He is an attacking midfielder that can play full back, but on the right hand of midfield is where I see his future forming a partnership with Clyne. He can cover for Clyne when injured, but does lack positioning and is too willing to pile forward. Two attack minded players that also defend well. Chambers has a lovely cross on him and I look forward to Rickie and JRod feeding off those balls which Punch is unable to deliver as he is a leftie.
Are you writing for Liverpool FC??At the beginning of every season they always say it's going to be their year!
To be fair, at the start of the season I couldn't really see him getting much game time either. Like you, more than happy to have got that one wrong. I'd forgotten, but my own prediction was Guly!
Mine was Chambers and I still think he will be a very good player as he did well when he had the chance. Will be hard to get past Clyne in his present form though. Interesting that JWP was hardly mentioned...he was a little sleeper for the fans. Luckily, Mauricio rated him and gave him chances.
Chambers was the real surprise I think; a decent stand in for when Clyne was injured. Just looked at his profile on the OS, and he's listed as a midfielder. what is his preferred position?
All except Lallana. I think we were all expecting great things from him. Nice to see him finally showing the world what Saints fans have known for a long time.
