Well I tend to agree. As much as I loved Trundle and Jase the Ace you're comparing apples and oranges. The Prem is one of the highest levels of the game and even a decent striker like Bony who was so prolific in the Eredivisie (not a poor League by any means) is taking time to find his feet. I'm thinking back to some of the great goals Scotland scored for us and it's hard to imagine he'd have a fraction of the time and space in this League.

Good debate though.

A benchmark set at a poor level is no benchmark at all. Doesn't matter if Trundle or Scotland scored eighty goals a season in League One. They still can't be compared to a player scoring goals at Premier League level. By being capable of regularly scoring goals against top quality opposition Bony has already surpassed both of them. It's a point so obvious I'm amazed that I'm having to make it at all.

Bony has yet to make his mark in the P.L.. He may well go on and emulate the goalscoring feats of Trundle and Scotland,and I hope he does just that. However,he's playing catch up at the moment.

I like Bony,(just thought I'd insert that lest I attract some unwarranted attention),and I WANT him to succeed for The Swans',thereby earning himself a future mention alongside both Lee Trundle,and Jason Scotland.
 
Well spotted Jack,but put that Uzi away,or you'll make him very nervous and he'll have to run for cover.

On the other hand,Dragon quite often has to run for cover,especially when those nasties from the East come visiting. Ha,ha!!!

He still got his fair share, though, hat tricks or not. Top striker. Love to have the '81 Latchford in our team now. Never mind, Bony is going to be great for us as well.

Yes i believe he will get the top end of 20 goals if he plays and stays injury free this season. As regards to who is the best striker then you have to take into account the era they played in. If jase and magic daps had the chance of playing with us in the premiership then they would score a lot of goals too. They fitted into our style of play that allowed them to excell and the minute they move on to another system then they lost their way and it was to late after that because of age creeping up on them. But if you ignore the level that they managed and judge them on ability as a striker then i would have wanted someone of trundles capabilities as he had it all and its just a shame the premiership came to late when he was in his prime...
 
Given the incredible impact Trundle had on us for me he is number one although we can all agree that we have been blessed up front with some real quality strikers over the years and long may it continue <ok>
 
Just as a point of reference, here are 3 top Dutch imports/ strikers took a bit longer to hit Bony type numbers

Suarez scored 17 in his first 39 appearances
Van Persie scored 10 in his first 41 appearances
Bergkamp 16 in first 41 appearances


....and they havent turned out too shabby!

I know what you are saying swim but these are big clubs with more players who can score regularly. We use to rely mainly on our striker to get the bulk of the goals. If a striker goes on a barren run then we have to hope others will chip in with goals like siggs did for us when danny was having a nightmare of a barren run. A big team can share the burden much more easily. Today we have Bony and Michu who are the main goal scorers and they have not quite gelled yet but once they do the pressure will be less of a burden on either player and we will find them scoring far more goals.
 
Trundle was better than Thomas. Scotland was better than Trundle. Graham was better than Scotland. Bony is better than Graham. That's how it works.

Trundle scoring loads of goals in League One or Two doesn't make him a better player than Bony by any remotely sensible definition of the word "better". More popular perhaps, but that's not the same thing.
 
I'm not sure that Bony can be described as being "better" than Graham,not yet,anyway.
More expensive to purchase,for sure,and perhaps that's the yardstick being used by some.
Graham had a pretty good first season in the PL,netting a dozen or so goals after a very slow start.
Bony will need to emulate that before receiving the "better than" accolade.

Trundle and Scotland have both set goal scoring benchmarks which Bony may,or may not,better. Only time will tell. We ALL hope he will.

Sad to see former heroes being dismissed so casually.
 
This discussion re the respective merits of our current,and former strikers,has led me to explore a few facts and figures,and I produce them for everyone's delectation.(I've always had a yen to use that word).

Lee Trundle - Cost = FREE
Goals scored = 83 (166)
Cost per goal = £NIL

Eventually sold to Bristol City for £1,000,000.00


Jason Scotland - Cost = £25,000.00
Goals scored = 45 (90)
Cost per goal = £555,56 each

Eventually sold to Wigan for £1,000,000.00.


Danny Graham - Cost =£3,500,000.00
Goals scored = 15 (54)
Cost per goal = £233,333,00

Eventually sold to Sunderland for £5,000,000.00

Wilfried Bony - Cost = £12,000,000.00
Goals scored to date - 10
Cost per goal = £1,200,000.00

Resale value ???

No allowances made in the above calculations for wages differential.

The above figures speak for themselves,and clearly indicate the value for money of each individual.
Of course,since WB is still a work in progress, his figures will change with time,but I still think the exercise has been a worthwhile one.
They also indicate the challenge facing WB to justify his price tag.

Apologies for not doing Bob Latchford's figures.
 
Ah but your missing a huge point there Vetch, Bony's goals in the grand scheme of things are worth more to us as a club that the likes of Trundle, just think what Premier League survival earns us ;)

So if you were to take into account that, then you could say he may well be more value for money :)
 
Good point, swans,but don't forget that it was a combination of the relatively cheap,actually overall they didn't cost a penny, Trundle and Scotland's goals that got the Club to the P.L. in the first place. So there!!!

So how do you then go about evaluating any particular player's contribution? Who is "better"? Impossible task,and unfair to any of them. IMHO.
 
Like I said, a good debate but impossible to assess who is 'better'. We can only hope that Bony keeps improving because I reckon he'll be a Prem version of Scotland for us pretty soon.
