Funny that, I'm sure 99% of managers would now consider a footballers finest attribute is athleticism. Why do you think they spend hundreds and thousands on conditioning and prozone stats? It's to give the team a competitive edge. Stick to Sunday league where fitness is less of a pre requisite!!!!
You're right but I hate this. When you watch footage of old players from the day when they drank and smoked, you can see they aren't as skillful as the players are now, but the defenders were so much worse that these attackers' bits of brilliance looked exactly that, brilliant. Nowadays everyone is so fit and strong and competitive that they all sort of cancel each other out and nothing happens. Except on the continent of course, where technique is still quite important. It also means that players who are skillful but lack power and fitness (Cairney?) don't make the grade and people like Harper play instead.
