"The Pub Landlord" is a character?...well whoever knew?...:emoticon-0118-yawn: ...It maybe clever and well observed...BUT it's just not that funny, where are the jokes?. If I wanted to see a middle aged man crassly insulting other cultures I'd just watch Top Gear. On the occasions where I have seen him on TV as himself he just tries so hard to be amusing by acting the fool, it would be better if he was more natural.
Ah, you don't get it, do you. It's a parody he's playing. The joke is himself and ourselves. The bigoted attitude is the joke, and it is extremely cleverly done. I find him hilarious because on the one hand Murray shows us the bigoted attitude of certain people we know, but then he'll throw in an observation that is true, or is it..? Is it one's personal bigoted attitude or is it a true observation..? The Pub Landlord is a sharply observed character, and I don't whether Al Murray will ever top him. Absolutely brilliant.

That's the joke. He's satirizing those kinds of people. I often get the feeling most of his audience don't realize that and are taking it at face value, which makes it even funnier for me.

Incidentally, the Top Gear guys are playing characters too.

I understand the satire, but I just don't find his material amusing...Probably just a personal view....

Please don't patronize me TSS...everyone has different views on what they find funny...AL Murray does not do it for me.

On another side of entertainment, I've just turned my TV off for the second time in one day..! Usually that covers one whole week.

But just before I pressed the off switch I believe I saw a programme starting where a muppet show character was talking inanely to people who seemed to be talking back and then there appeared to be people laughing fit to bust. I turned the TV off before my brain tried to escape my head and run away to hide.

What on Earth was that..?

OK, if you don't find it amusing, fine. I thought you didn't get the joke. The clue I got was that you said there weren't any jokes, and of course there is one long running joke.

One joke can get old quite quickly though...

Of course I get it...he is playing the kind of bigoted person that you meet in every day life...He is the Alf Garnett of today but that's the point what he is doing is not new and he doesn't have funny dialogue...just my opinion though.

Well, it's one long joke in the same way that Borat is one long joke.

The only programme guaranteed to make me laugh out loud is Would I Lie to You.

Hmm, nah. David Mitchell is fine but Lee Mack is relatively unfunny. Mitchell and Brydon are far better elsewhere, in my opinion, and I was told that Lee Mack was hilarious in Not Going Out. Then I watched one episode and found it incredibly unfunny. Don't mind the theme tune though. So I guess I'm not a Lee Mack fan, and also I can't really be bothered with the concept of WILTY.[?] anyway, so that's out as well.

Everyone seems to be much better when they're on QI. Even Lee Mack, and that's stretching an approval to breaking point. Each to their own, as they say.

Why do you guys hate me because I've got a different opinion to you? It's sad. I like you guys and you don't like :(. Let's call it truths. I'm a good poster just got controversial views. Love you :D. Adam Banana xxxx

Nobody hates you Adam. You broke the forum rules. That means you were banned and you don't come back. Your countless efforts to impress just make people laugh or get annoyed. So goodbye and go and haunt some other forum.

Ummm....without wanting to sound like a twat (yet probably failing), I know Al a bit and he's genuinely on if the brightest, most erudite and funniest people I know. In terms of well observed stand up, i personally think only Tim Minchin these days tops him. Bill Bailey is fantastic live too, though has lost a bit of edge the last couple of times I've seen him (like Eddie Izzard has too). Apparently his new material is excellent though.

Much like music, is best when seen live...

1) I think you've been drinking. ;)

2) It's nothing personal, I just don't like a lot of your opinions. I don't like libertarianism in general.

I accept your opinion and respect and I have been drinking. Love you Joe.

Gervais is very funny, but his fascination with God is tedious now, like 90% of his tweets are about God or religion.... like, okay, I get it, you're an atheist, fair enough, but give it a rest. Karl Pilkington is my hero and Clive Warren is my favourite actor :p

I like you guys and I never say anything controversial on the saints related threads, just on these off topic threads. I'll be a good boy, I promise. You know I have good morals. I'm a good guy really, just too passionate. :)

Gervais is a genius. A very smug genius, but a genius nonetheless.

Overly smug, in my opinion. I don't find his delivery funny. I know I'm supposed to, but I don't. The peculiar thing is everyone, without exception, that I happen to know personally also finds him unfunny. Who do you find funny [?] has been a topic of conversation around the table with close friends only in the last month.

Must be a generation thing with him.
