Surely it's simple, RVW's fee came from money designated for the 2012/13 season. Which means it had no impact on amount available this window.
The big thing is very few people actually know how big our transfer kitty is

I'm hoping to see good performances from Butterfield and David Fox on Tuesday night.
Hopefully Olsson gets a decent run out, too, as Garrido had a 'mare against Hull <yikes>

Totally agree. Howson should only be played as an AM., Butterfield is very much an attacking two footed AM, and the enigma that is our Wes . But I would not be averse to an upgrade on these arriving, though none of us are sure what an upgrade on Butterfield would be. His reputation in the championship would seem to indicate a very good player in the making.

Can't argue with aany of that!!!! I'd love to see JB get a decent run out, as the only time I can remember seeing him in Yellow and Green was a cameo against Peterborough in the cup!!! Fox was excellent in that game too.

Remember that Butterfield can play virtually anywhere in the midfield (another advantage of a two-footed player)......

But apparently Howson can't according to a lot of posters on here. Truth is, none of us have seen enough of Butterfield to say where his best position is. For the record, if you look at the entries for Butterfield and Howson on transfermkt (the data reflects positional history), Howson and Butterfield have identical profiles (Primary position: CM; secondary positions ACM and WM). The difference is that Butterfield has tended to play on the right, Howson on the left (at Leeds I presume). <ok>

Are you really trying to say you've been impressed or even just comfortable with Howson's performances in a holding role alongside Bradders or wide depping for Snoddy / E Benno? I know 'needs must' and all, when we're short of numbers but it appears that Hughton views him as some kind of 'utility' player.

As I said yesterday, if CH is so enthralled with the idea of a utility player, there's still a whole week of transfer window shopping time to sign one. Better that than hold a decent player's career back by playing him out of position 65% of the time <ok>

Those are fair points Cromer, but who would you have played in the wide positions against Hull? Howson's best position, IMO, is ACM, but I wonder if CH sees a 'tactical understanding' between Fer and RvW up front. I'm not sure these are things that can be decided in training sessions. I think Howson will play ACM more this year once other players are fit, but we'll have to see.

if Snoddy wasn't then Olsson should have played left wing and redmond on the right.

Saturday, as RiverEndRick points out, was a matter of circumstances and Howson was a perfectly sensible if imperfect solution. CH's use of Howson last season was also largely down to injury, in particular to Tettey. If Howson thinks his career is being held back he has a solution in his own hands -- a transfer request; but maybe he actually thinks he's becoming a better because a more rounded player. <ok>

The fact David Fox is playing for the under 21's today with Ayala whilst no other older players are even with a league cup game tomorrow says it all. He must be leaving soon.

Both Murphy's are playing too, so we aren't going to see either of them starting against Bury. What's Ayala doing giving away a pen 4 mins into the match? <ok>

Not exactly a glittering career. Most game time came in Turkey, can barely get a game at Atalanta. It's either BS from the fail or it is a bit of a worrying signing. Why.... Why go and waste a budget on someone of his calibre when we have 2 players atleast who play similar position and are probably better!

Well according to someone on the pink un he and CH were at Newcastle at the same time, and he was tipped as a big thing when he left for Turkey.
Maybe CH thinks he can get the best out of him?
