The media didn't take to Mourinho straight away, he was much maligned at first and there's still a large contingent of anti-Mourinho journalists in the press. Mourinho indirectly went after the press by saying things like "When Chelsea lose, it's a national holiday for everybody in the country", AVB directly went after them with his press conference following the win against Valencia.
You are right in the sense that AVB is far more introvert and not a showman like Mourinho. Everybody knew the Mourinho act wouldn't last, he loves the headlines, hasn't changed at all. AVB is less media savvy and doesn't like the media attention so when attacked, he often panicked and came out with ridiculous retorts.
Mourinho's the king of ridiculous retorts. He accused UEFA of being part of a conspiracy with refs to help Barca, then he had the cheek to moan about Lambert pointing out some poor decisions!
