It is starting to look a bit thin on the ground for homegrowns though, especialy when, from our current squad, Parker, Bale and Naughton look the most sell-able (wishful thinking on the Naughton front - and could mention Rose here too). So IF we sell Parker and Bale (and replace them with non-home growns which seems likely) AND we don't just happen to have a squad place available we could find ourselves in a position where, in a January window, we could ONLY buy homegrown! Not a good position to be in. I'm sure that this must be being considered by the club and wonder if it's in the club's mind when we hear reports of interest in Ince, for example. With the system how it is you do need a supply of homegrown who are good enough (tough when your options are England and Wales) and/or cheap enough. We've been in a very comfortable position on this front since the rule came in but look to be heading somewhere where it could prove a significant factor in transfer activity.
unfortunately homegrown talent gets thinner each year and it's hard for young players unless they are truly special to get a chance, so I would rather townsend Is given a chance before we spend big on Ince. Also I'll like us to use the capital 1 cup to give our top young players 90 minutes which will tell us a lot about their potential. Although the under 21 thread on here does seem to highlight the fact we have some talented youngster's, but very few actually progress to the level we need. I did read that last season we had a scout attending Tom Inces games for blackpool so there must have been a reason we never made a bid and instead signed chadi.
Could we bump up Kane and Carroll into our squad to fulfil quota? That would mean we had to sell to buy though. Just thinking for January if we need to strengthen a position and do t fancy a homegrown
By my calculation we've got 11 homegrown at the moment (plus kane ) and around 14/15 non homegrown, plus bentaleb, ceballos and fryers (U21), so there's a bit of scope for chopping and changing.
Pretty sure its 10 in the 25. Don't forget Carroll doesn't need a squad place yet so currently isn't one of our homegrown in the 25. Check the 1st post which is updated
It's looking a bit touch and go with this, isn't it? Not many of our rumoured targets would qualify as homegrown and a number of our players that appear to be on the way out are. Time to start producing more youth players, though we seem to have taken some big steps in that direction over the past couple of seasons.
whats the penalty for failing to comply? Points deduction? That would just be a typical way for Spurs to "fail" for the 3rd year in a row
I just said the same thing on the transfer thread! Who, though? Can't see Fraser Forster leaving Celtic unless he's guaranteed a start, pretty much. Linked with Benfica, IIRC. I know that we looked at Reading's Alex McCarthy a while ago, so maybe he's a worthwhile option?
No penalty, just would have less than 25 players available. It's a maximum of 17 overseas players, rather than a minimum of homegrown. I doubt Arsenal/Chelsea have always had 8 homegrown.
Not while Reading insist he's worth £15m he isn't. That's almost as much as we spent for Lloris and Gomes - combined!
It was only a couple of years or so ago though that we sent someone out on loan because he wouldn't fit in the squad, and then ended up having to have a 4th goalkeeper to make up the 25 So don't get too excited just yet
