Possibly, but that's making quite some assumption that he'll still be at his best when he's nearing 34 years old.
How old was Henry when you re-signed him? A player who through most of his career had blistering pace? What about Drogba when he won the champions league? On a lower level (throughout career), how is Kevin Phillips doing? 34 is not particularly old nowadays. Fitness is better yada yada yada. Most distance runners (for example) don't hit their peak til their 30s. Perhaps if Arsenal signed someone over the age of 12 you might win an actual trophy rather than that 4th trophy you love so much
My point about paying £26M for a 28 year old was nothing to do with whether he could play at a high level for another 5 years, but the fact that he would have little or no resale value. It appears very unlike Levy to smash the club's transfer record on a player he is unlikely to see any financial return from.
The financial return will come with better results and CL qualification. Levy knows full well the need for Spurs to make that breakthrough. He is showing confidence in AVB and backing his judgement. At this point resale value is not the issue we needed a striker.
On the upside, and Levy must be getting absolutely pig-sick of it, he's unlikely to be pushing for a big move to Real at any point.
Is he really 28? Seems a high price then, but like you say, you are desperate for a forward so needs must. What happened to the brazilian one you've been linked with forever??
This has been our issue before as I've been crying out for Levy to take a risk and understand initially the transfer fee may look risky but if it gets us champions league football then the risk was worth it, not just in a financial sense but also football. However as Luke says, the signing is still a surprise, just because a year ago if you said we would have broke our transfer record twice and signed Paulinho & Soldado for 17 million and 28 million, would anyone have believed it? I doubt it! These are not just risky signings based on fees, they are two players that may not even adapt or could take a year to adapt (especially in the case of paulinho) but still its good to see Levy has changed his ways now we have a DOF.
Either that or Levy is turning over in his DoF grave because he gave full control to Baldy and he's spending like money is going out of fashion. Levy is just at home pulling his hair (!!!) out.
