Personally I think this lad is way out of our league...

NEWCASTLE are the latest club to show an interest in Lyon's Bafetimbi Gomis while Hull are in contention to bring teammate Jimmy Briand to the Premier League.

Newcastle are interested in Bafetimbi Gomis

Lyon are looking to cut their wage bill this summer and Gomis and Briand, along with Yoann Gourcuff, have been made available for transfer.

And this has piqued Newcastle's interest in bringing Gomis, who has been compared to Didier Drogba, to St James' Park.

According to reports in France, the Magpies have made an enquiry but are yet to follow it up with a formal bid.

The arrival of Bafetimbi Gomis would give Alan Pardew more options up front

Toon interest in the French international may have been sparked by the ongoing row with Papiss Cisse over shirt sponsor Wonga, which could see him leave the club.

Whilst Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas wants to sell Gomis to the highest bidder, the player reportedly only wishes to join a club playing the the Champions League.

Aston Villa, Swansea and Cardiff have also previously been linked with a move for the 27-year-old and Villa in particular were thought to be on the verge of making a £8m bid as an insurance policy against losing Christian Benteke.

But with Champions League football set to be a deal-breaker it appears that Shaktar Donetsk may now hold the upper hand in the race to add Gomis, if they can agree a transfer fee with Lyon.

His name's been mentioned quite a bit recently. One or two on the trip to Motherwell were talking about him.

No point in getting excited yet though, you know what our lot are like.

Another hard one for Joe to get his tongue around.

Jean Michel Aulas has confirmed our reports that Lyon are talking to Newcastle and Aston Villa for Bafetimbi Gomis. #OL #AVFC #NUFC

^^^ Think he is the owner of Lyon.

Well if Cisse leaves at least we have Shola and Campbell ready to start the new season. I bet the opposition are pissing themselves with fear over that strike force.

That's always been my concern when we have been linked with him in the past.

He's looked better in recent seasons though:

2011-2012 - 53 appearances / 25 goals
2012-2013 - 40 appearances / 20 goals

A goal every 2 games is not too shabby.

His record has got better. Of course he is playing for one of the top sides and it all depends what happens when he is dropped into a mid table side who will not create as many chances?

Newcastle United step up chase for Bafitmibi Gomis

The Chronicle can confirm that talks between Newcastle United and the French international are under way and the Lyon player is said to be keen to move

Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas went public that Newcastle were in the hunt for the 27-year-old star.

And the Chronicle can confirm that talks with the French international are now under way.

Magpies boss Alan Pardew is in constant contact with his board on Tyneside and is hoping to push the deal through this week.

Gomis is thought to be keen on the move to Newcastle and his arrival would be a massive boost for both United and the fans who are yet to see a breakthrough in the transfer market this summer.

Gomis has just one year left on his current deal with Lyon and the Magpies could net the player for a knockdown fee.

With Papiss Cisse, currently embroiled in a disagreement about wearing Wonga shirts, now looking increasingly likely to leave Newcastle, Gomis would add some much needed firepower to the Toon attack.

Maybe some good news soon, however with the clubs way of working we will be prob see one of the top stars sold To even it out.
