The majority of recruitment businesses will charge around 20% of a candidates first year salary when they put them into a company, as I well know to my cost. That's an "out of football" industry standard. If the person gets headhunter into your business for a specific position it's more.

This has the feel of the Buttner situation...extra money requested for an agent (his father) and Saints withdrew from deal. Celtic having accepted an offer from us, quite rightly reject the offer from Cardiff (at least for the moment). However, they may have to accept Cardiff's lesser offer if the player (and agent) prefer that deal. Cortese won't go cap in hand...as I said before, this player is not essential to us.

Those % may be distorted by contract renewals that will also inude agent fees but no transfer fee.

And they seem to have missed part of the context to Nixon's tweets, methinks; they're clearly even demanding more than 1m, because he wouldn't have added the "and some of the digits aren't zeroes" if it was 1,090,000 or some such.

That's what I thought. 5% is the norm, so they'll say they just want the norm.

However, there's two of them. So really they want 10% out of Nicola.

Nice try guys.....but you'll have to do better than that.

Could be that, yeah. I'm fairly confident that they could be convinced to take £600k between them, as that is the standard rate, and hopefully Cortese would be okay with that figure, even though it's almost what we spent on all the agent fees combined last season.

They've clearly noticed how stingy Cortese can be with agent fees, so decided to go the other way with it and highball him to make a statement.

If this deal somehow ends up getting completed it would be a greater tale than Saint Gaston.

    As it is though... <wah>

Now the agents are in the public eye it may push their hand to do what's best for their client, or it may harm their reputation and clubs may be put off dealing with them.

Be interesting to gauge the media/public reaction now; two unpopular parties in a public stand-off. Agents and Cortese.

Could anyone explain why it is the clubs which pay the agent fees? Surely if they are working for the player, then it is the player who should pay them? It would surely be easier for the club to deal directly with the player, I'm sure Cortese knows how to draw up a contract! It seems we pay extra for nothing in return.

I'm not convinced its all about greed, just Wanyama and agent trying to get Liverpool, Arsenal, Inter and any other club 'allegedly' interested in signing the player involved. I would think whatever they say in public isn't true, the truth is Wanyama wants to play for one of the 'big' clubs interested in him and they will say anything to delay Saints (without rejecting them fully) in the hope one of these teams comes in. I would imagine if one of these teams did have an offer accepted they wouldn't need to offer as much as we have in personal terms or fees.

If this is really how the player feels - he doesn't want to play for us - lets not waste anymore time on him. Great player thought he is, its more important to get a player in who believes in our dream and get him in sooner rather than later.

Agree we need players who buy into the clubs vision. If he doesn't let's move on. Plenty more fish in the sea!

My only guess is that it could mean less tax. Saints pay the player (in wages or signing on fee) and it is taxed. Player pays agent and it is then taxed again, either as income tax or VAT for services provided.

Have you never had a girlfriend that was reluctant to go out on a date with you, only for her to find that after a date or two, you really are a nice guy and better than what people said and she starts to fall in love? Sometimes love at first sight doesn't happen. It's a bit like being left with only one girl to dance with at the school prom, so you reluctantly do it and end up being the only one to get laid
