Would he act as a back-up to Victor Valdes (I think he said he's staying?). I mean ter Stegen's blunder against USA would be akin to a Valdes blunder <laugh>

Apparently they're loaning him back to Gladbach for next season. Last I heard, Valdes said he was leaving once his contract was up next season.

That would make sense, a bit like Chelsea loaning Courtois back to Atletico. Yeah, I thought he had a interview a few weeks back saying he would be seeing out the remainder of his contract.

Edit: Except Courtois wasn't permenantly at Atletico - D'oh!

What with Poch and Mourinho being 'mates' - will this increase our chances of taking some Chelsea players on loan, now the special one is back in the PL?

mourinho is seemingly mates with half the managers in the pl though

From NewsnowIf Ramirez left the club he would leave a rather obvious whole in the teams attacking line up, with the only other attacking midfielder in the squad being Guly, who is a solid player, but would not match up to the man he was replacing. This would leave Pochettino with a dilemma and there would be the definite need to bring in some more creative talent.Espanyol’s Joan Verdú is a strong candidate for this role and should be a potential target as a Ramirez replacement. The flamboyant midfielder may not be that young but he could bring some valuable experience to the squad, not to mention his superb ability on the ball and determination in every game. There is also the possibility of signing him on a free transfer as talks with his current club appear to be breaking down and he may walk. It was claimed by talkSport that Juventus may want Ramirez as a replacement for Andrea Pirlo. Ramirez does have a very bright future ahead of him, but it may be too early to claim he will be a fitting replacement to one of the greatest midfielders of his time. Ramirez should also consider his career when debating the move, especially the array of attacking talent already present in the Juventus squad, and whether he would get the playing time he needs to progress. Either way, this transfer rumour should be of great concern to Saints and the manager should do everything he can to keep the young star. However, if he were to go, the chairman should be prepared to dig deep into his pockets to find a replacement for Ramirez and keep Southampton’s promising future alive.

Just a couple of bits:

1) Joan Verdu has been offered a new contract by Espanyol but has not signed, saying his future will be clear in the next few days.

2) Napoli are also in the hunt for Gonzalo Bueno.

Steven Davis has started at CAM several times in 4-2-3-1. Guly's best position is at CAM but never gets to play there anymore.

I'd say Guly's best position was more advanced than CAM, he's more of a second striker really and Davis' best position is CM.

I think we need an out and out CAM regardless of whether Gaston stays or not.

As I've said a few times now, Hiroshi Kiyotake of Nuremberg fits the bill perfectly. Our scouts have already been looking at him.

we have plenty of players who can play at cam, it's a genuine winger we need in my opinion.

Like who? Who would be good enough from the U21s? Bearing in mind the English talent that we already have, just who should be signed?

I actually really, really like Craig Dawson. Whenever I see him play he reminds me of Jamie Carragher in the way he impresses without actually impressing, if that makes sense. Not sure if he'd want to move to us from West Brom though. But apart from that, I'd only take Caulker and Chalobah from the U21s squad, and neither would happen

Can't see us buying a young England CB when we have Stephens and Turnbull who should come through in the next couple of seasons.

Yeah I'd take Dawson, happily.

Just need to add things we don't already have i.e. pace in the centre of denfence, pace on the wing, an extra option up front (could take a real punt here as we already have very decent options) and a physical defensive midfielder.

If players of Verdu's quality are interested and available, though, we would be foolish to turn it down. I'm not saying get everyone who is available but adding quality players to the squad is what it's all about in the premiership.

Providing we progress year on year we should be in no danger at all of looking over our shoulders and youngsters who are good enough should always get a chance.

A v sensible post

Seems like there's something in the Spanish press about us and a formal bid. Can't get a translation at the moment, just sticking the laptop on.
