To play devil's advocate for a moment, he's probably as good as some of the more exotic names that get mentioned. He formed a productive partnership with (and out-scored) Rodriguez at Burnley, and considering where most of our squad has come from, we're surely not above signing players from the championship are we?

Thats what I've been thinking. Lambert can make the jump and Austin is 23, he has plenty of time to develop. He has been prolific for a couple of seasons now. I personally don't feel that a striker is our priority, for me its competition at CB, cover/competition at CDM and attacking wide player. If we were to sign these then Austin would be the icing on the cake. And we shouldn't be snotty about players simply because they're in championship teams, it's all about potential and if MP and the transfer board think he will do well then I'm all for it.

Hold onto your hats everyone, we've been linked with Charlie Austin: http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11095/8724836/

Sort of.

Not aiming high enough IMO ,also one reason Swindon got rid of him was because he split the dressing in half because of his antics with the goalies fiancée,quite disruptive by all accounts.

So we can't sign a player because he shagged another players girl at a club over 2 years ago?! Unless he is disruptive by nature, in which case think twice.

Can anyone suggest footballing reasons why we shouldn't sign him- apart the fact that he has no PL experience?

nothing wrong with Championship players, they just do not offer value. Im sure Austin and Rhodes would be valued at around 8mil, the same as Coutinho cost Liverpool and Im sure who I would prefer. Hoping MP has some bargains up his sleeve

With our apparent inability to turn possession & chances into goals in the last few games of the season, I wouldn't be surprised to see another striker come in. Only lambert & Rodriguez as senior options really (not seen enough of mayuka to be convinced yet), big burden for lambo to carry for a 2nd season

Napoli set to sign Benatia for €12m, could mean they have dropped interest in Astori?
