In terms of probability/likelihood, we could still go down, but it is just as likely (actually probably more likely) that the teams above us, up to and including West Ham, could all lose and we would finish 10th. In all honesty, I can't see West Ham losing to Reading, but it could be Nigel's last gift to us. If we beat Stoke, Newcastle will need to beat Arsenal, who still need to win their games to finish above Spurs in the top four and get Champions League next season. Our loss to Spurs could be a masterstroke of keeping teams interested until the final whistle next week.

Do the BBC Predictor and then come back and rewrite your first line. It's virtually impossible. So slender is it that results never before recorded have to come about. And that's if Wigan win against Arsenal first.

I agree that we are not going down, but for the purposes of pedantry/debate I consider that we are more likely to improve our final position.

lol, why are we getting so hung up on this?

According to statistics/probability, We could still go down. FACT. It's not 100%. That said, the odds are so great against it that it's hugely unlikely to happen.
Just like it is statistically possible for Saints to finish 10th. But the odds agains that are also pretty huge. Not quite as bad as Saints getting relegated, but certainly small enough that it really shouldn't seriously be considered.

It is probably more likely that I will win the lottery next week than Saints get relegated.

I'm not even sure you need to use the word probably.

On that topic, Nigel could do us one last favour by beating the Hammers, if we overcome Stoke, and Norwich and Newcastle succumb to City and Arsenal as you would expect, and the Royals get a win then we would still finish 10th (Assuming Fulham don't bugger Swansea). I still believe! <laugh>

*EDIT* Apologies, only really just read the last couple of pages in detail (Too much 'WE COULD STILL GO DOWN' nonsense for me to stomach at first), and I notice this was already being discussed.

Well I said 10th to 13th at the start of the season and it's still looking OK. I latterly said we may finish above WHU, just to piddle off Twixter, and that's looking less likely. :)

With the ups and downs we've had this season, I really wouldn't be surprised if we did finish 10th. I'm not expecting it though. Just hoping that we finish on a high, with three points.

OK, I know we're not mathematically safe, but by my calculations the only way we can be relegated is to lose to Stoke by at least 12 goals. Frankly, that simply isn't going to happen.

Therefore, I've decided to open the bubbly. Well done saints, I think we've been better than our league position suggests, but the key thing this first year was staying up and I'm delighted we're not going to be involved on the final day. I'm very confident we can build on this next season.

    Cheers everyone <bubbly>

OK, here's how it breaks down. This only works if Wigan beat Arsenal. Otherwise all bets are off and everyone stays up except Wigan, no matter what. So, here we go...

    Wigan beat Arsenal on Tuesday.

Then Stoke have to beat Saints 13-0 at St Marys, OK..? Wigan then beat Villa 1-0 [it would be 14-0 and 2-0, 15-0 and 3-0, etc...]

    AND

Sunderland have to beat Spurs at White Hart Lane..!

Then Saints are relegated. :) Whatever happens, if Villa beat Wigan then Saints stay up. Happy now..?

Now go and drink the rest of that half empty glass. <laugh>

I don't want to cause you to panic, but for what it's worth I think it is possible for Saints to go down by losing 12-0 to Stoke if Villa lose 5-4 to Wigan, as Villa will then be above us on goals scored ...

Oh OK, that's not a variable I properly explored. I'm trembling already. :)

Well we're as close to safe as you can get without actually being 100% safe, and I'm confident we'll hit 100% after Arsenal v Wigan. In that respect it's been a good day. I accept that it's okay for the fans to sit back and enjoy survival, but I think it's also fair to point out that our finish to the season has been disappointing. For all the talk of moving on to greater things when we beat Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea we've stumbled (at best) over the finish line and Ramirez's suspension for these last few games has shown the relative lack of depth in the squad - we have very few attacking options on the bench.

There was a story on the BBC website this week about Alex Ferguson at Aberdeen. A week or so after winning the Cup Winners' Cup, Aberdeen put in a poor performance in the Scottish Cup final but still won. The players were all celebrating when Ferguson stormed into the dressing room and tore them to shreds for such a poor performance. I hope Pochettino takes a similar approach. While it's okay for the fans to enjoy themselves, the squad needs improving in all areas and some players need to up their game or be replaced.

Watched our game on SFF and came to the conclusion that we were the better team, but we didn't win because Simon Mignolet had an inspired game and Rickie couldn't get his shots on target.

He got his last one on target and was denied by a great save.

I've just come back on here after a few hours. Tell me that there aren't still people who think we can realistically be relegated. Dumb Britain.
